Ji Eun brushed mascara onto her lashes very quickly before heading downstairs. Hoseok would be here soon to pick her up. Ji Eun was excited to get to hang out with Hoseok, it had been about two weeks since they had last hung out. Ji Eun didn't want to admit it but she had missed him. Of course, they had messaged back and forth during this time but that wasn't the same as seeing him in person. She'd grown quite fond of Hoseok at this point and sometimes the voice inside her head told her that opening up to him may not be that bad. The other voice that was inside her head, the voice of her anxiety, seemed to always convince her otherwise.
Ji Eun was slipping her shoes on when the doorbell rang throughout the house. "It's unlocked Hobi, just come in." She shouted toward the door and it began to inch open moments after. "I'm just about ready let me finish putting my shoes on." She smiled up to the man.
Hoseok smiled back at her. Even though he knew he was about to have a hard conversation with her, her smile never ceased to always make him smile. He also knew he needed to act normal for the beginning of the night, until he brought up the topic. "Take your time Eun."
"I'm ready when you are." Ji Eun stood up and looked at Hoseok.
"Alright, let's head out then." Hoseok opened the door and gestured out it.
The car ride to his apartment was quiet. He couldn't really think of anything to say to her because he was so nervous. He just hoped that Ji Eun wouldn't notice.
"Are you okay, Hobi? You seem a bit off." Only she did notice about halfway to Hoseok's apartment.
"What? Of course I'm okay, Eun. Don't worry about me." He shot off his signature bright smile. If there was one thing Hoseok was good at it was faking that bright smile of his when he couldn't produce it naturally.
"Oh, um, okay. Sorry."
"Don't apologize, thanks for worrying about me." Hoseok took a glance toward the girl and then focused back on the road.
Once the two had reached Hoseok's apartment it wasn't quite as awkward they had fallen into a smooth conversation. They talked like they always did. Ji Eun asked how Hoseok's day went and he answered, with a small white lie of course, and then asked her how her's had gone. The conversation between the two was always so easy but Hoseok couldn't help but have a nagging voice telling him that he needed to bring up the real reason he had invited her over.
"So, what exactly are we doing tonight?" Ji Eun asked when their dialogue came to a lull.
Hoseok paused at her question. Did he want to talk about this now, at the beginning of the night? He had realized at this point that he hadn't had a plan for the night other than talking to Ji Eun. Which he then decided meant that now was the time to do it. Now or never.
He sighed. "Ji Eun, we need to talk."
Ji Eun sucked in a gasp of air. She didn't like the way Hoseok had gotten so serious so quickly. What does he need to talk with her about that could be this serious?
"Okay? About what?" She tried to keep her breathing even and told herself that she had no clue what he was going to say it could be nothing. She needed to calm down.
"This, um, this is kind of hard to say actually, I didn't think it be quite this hard." He rubbed his face. Ji Eun scrunched her face slightly in confusion. "How long have we known each other now?"
"About 6 months, why?"
"How much do you know about me?"
"Um, I don't know. I know a lot I guess. Where is this going, Hobi?" Ji Eun was still confused by what Hoseok was saying but there was a small inkling in the back of her brain that told her she knew exactly where this conversation was leading and she wasn't ready for that.
"You do know a lot about me because I've told you a lot about me." This was the moment that Ji Eun knew that this was going to lead to her not opening up ever to the man before her. "But I can't help but notice that I don't know all too much about you Ji Eun. Why is that?"
The desperation in Hoseok's eyes hurt Ji Eun to her core but the fear raging inside her mind was stronger than the need to make Hoseok's eye bright and happy again. The fear clouded over every other emotion floating inside Ji Eun's mind. He had finally noticed. She knew he would, he's a smart man. She just hadn't taken the time to figure out what she would do when he did.
But now here she was sitting in front of Hoseok staring at him speechless and scared.
Ji Eun's head began to shake slowly as she stared into Hoseok's eyes. "I-" her voice cracked as tears welled up in her eyes, "I can't do this." Right as these words left her lips Ji Eun ran out of Hoseok's apartment door leaving it wide open in her wake.
Hoseok began to run after her calling her name, but stopped himself was he reached the sidewalk outside his apartment complex. He knew that she didn't need him chasing after her. He saw her on her phone standing on the edge of the sidewalk. He could faintly hear the words coming out of her mouth. "Seoyeon I need you to come get me."
He sighed as he sat down on the steps leading to his building. He rubbed his face then stared up at the sky. He could feel the tears swelling up in his eyes as he looked up at the moon.
He sat on the stoop until he saw Ji Eun climb into the car with Seoyeon. She gave him the smallest of glances as she shut the passenger door.
Hoseok knew that asking her why she hadn't told him much about herself was going to be a hard conversation to have but he didn't expect Ji Eun to run out the way that she had. He felt awful when he looked at his door that stood agape, but now sitting on his bed an hour later having texting her asking if she was okay only to get no answer he felt hurt and a little angry. He asked a simple question all she had to say was it was a hard topic for her and asked for him to just be patient with her. But he had been patient, he didn't want to push her but he also wanted to know more about Ji Eun. He liked her and just wanted to really get to know the person he was gaining feelings for.
As Hoseok thought about all of this he decided that it was best to just leave her be and let her talk to him when she was ready. He made the decision that he wouldn't try to contact her to give her the space that he was sure that she needed.
