13 - from a lie

TWO WEEKS LATER

Two weeks have passed and I still think from time to time. I wonder how it feels to be like Stef or the twins, who have known him for longer.

However, I'm starting to slowly become used to him not around blabbering about football.

"Students, meet your new classmate." Mr. Owen says, disrupting me from my thoughts.

There she was. A brunette with blond highlights, tall skinny girl standing in the door frame. Her teeth were white and straight. She wore a black hoodie with denim pants and some light makeup.

"Hey Merliah."

My eyes widended. Everyones eyes targeted to me while I focused on her face. I know her.

She's my ex best friend.

She smiles sweetly to me while I roll my eyes. She sat beside Aaron, of course flirting with him already. I wasn't jealous but, it's so annoying hearing her stupid high pitched laugh across the classroom.

Lunch started so I walked to my normal table with Stef, Alex, and the twins.

I see them eating their food happily while I was picking at mine.

"Not hungry?" I turned around and see Grayson look at me. Our legs were touching and his eye contact made me a little nervous.

"Yeah." I said dryly.

"Real reason?" Alex says with his mouth full.

"Chew first, dumbass." Stef rolls her eyes making me laugh.

I exhale, "Well, My Ex-

"You have an ex?!" Ethan and Grayson say at the same time.

"Jealous much?" I winked at Gray making his eyes roll.

"And no, I don't have an ex-boyfriend. What I do have is an ex-best friend. I don't even know why she's back."

They stay silent for a while until Stef starts to talk, "And why are you guys not friends anymore?"

"Well, something happened before and it was like, a huge problem in my old school. Especially for me. Sometimes I'm really grateful that I left."

Ethan recieves a text making Stef curious, "ooo who's that Dolan?"

He smiles, "No no, our sisters back from New Jersey. She's going to study here now."

They all nod and as if on cue, the bell rings.

I head out of class and see that my ex best friend was leaning back on the lockers. When she looked up to me, she started to catch up with me while I was walking faster. Then she did, so we both had to stop in the middle of the hallways.

She grabs my shoulders making me face her, "Hey, you're still mad at me?"

I laugh, "You think not? I don't think I could ever forgive you for what you've done. You ruined me life!" I whisper shout.

She said sorrily, "I'm sorry, okay? I've been trying to call you but you never responded."

"Maybe because there's no signal under water?" I said sarcastically. She stays quiet.

"Look, can I ever make it up to you?"

I stay silent for a few seconds, "No. And don't try to ruin my life under water and on land again!"

I ran away even though Grayson was calling my name through the hallways. I headed home quick, greeting my parents very fast and shut the door of my bedroom. As if on cue, I started to cry.

She never should've come back. Years ago in my old school, she was my only friend. I trusted her so much that I told her I was a mermaid. Of course she didn't believe but then I spun my necklace and my tail started to form. She was surprised, but then she promised me to keep it a secret.

Then one day in my room she asked if she could wear the necklace. I said no, because first of all a tail won't even form — it has to be mermaid blood. And second, that was my moms gift to me and I don't know what I'd do if it broke or got lost.

Then she got mad at me. We both argued and her calling me bad things and same with me. When she had enough, she left my house.

The next day as I went to school I got eyes looking at me. I heard a cry near a locker and people surrounding it. As I got a clear view, it was no other but my ex best friend.

"I mean, how could she even do this?!" She cried harder while other girls were patting her back.

Then they spotted me. The girls rolled their eyes at me and went away.

"What are you even talking about?" I say to her.

"You!" She made it loud for everyone to here.

"Listen everyone! This girl, is a life ruiner! She kissed my boyfriend, Nate!"

I gasped and so did the small crowd.

"No! I would never do that!" I yell back at her.

"Oh really, Merliah? Get away from me!" She pushed me leaving the crowd. When she left, everyone did the same.

Then the whole week I'd get harsh looks from everyone. My people from Oceana heard too, and I felt so miserable. Even my mom thought I'd do such things. When I couldn't take it anymore, I asked my mom if I could leave the school and transfer.

She said yes fortunately, and from there on I tried to start a new life.

Back to the present, you could see why she ruined my life. From a Lie.

Her name is Cameron Dolan, the reason why I left almost everything behind.
