Max and Bev arrived at the lunch table where their friends were waiting for them. Since their quarrel with Jane and her friends, the two girls had marks on their necks, and Max still had a cut on her lip.
- "It hurts?" asked Lucas.
- "Only when I smile," answered Max.
- "Thanks god you never smile!" joked Mike.
The table chuckled while Max showed him her middle finger. Mike answered with an air kiss in her direction, which she avoided.
- "I know I'm your favorite one," smiled the black-haired boy.
- "You mean after Gary, Bev, Lucas, Dustin, and Will? Yeah, of course."
Mike winced.
- "You're not welcomed in my basement anymore."
- "It's fine, I've my flat, where you're not welcomed either."
- "How is it in your flat? Is the neighborhood nice?" asked Dustin.
- "Yeah, they're not annoying, and the streets are kinda calm, it's cool, and it's close to my work."
- "That's great, and you don't see Neil and Billy anymore, it's even better!" stated Bev.
- "Yeah! That's the best part! Finally free!"
- "And you, Will? How is your mother? She still has problems with the girls at the center?" asked Lucas.
- "No, she is ok with them, she didn't come back with bruises since days now, but, the center begins to lose funds, so, she thinks it will be closed down..."
- "Oh shit! What is she gonna do?"
- "She began to look in the newspapers for little works and sent her CV to cabinets and hospitals, as she is a nurse too, but I think she likes being an educator, seeing thess girls evolving, it's what she prefers."
- "Well, for now it's hypothetical, maybe the center will find other funds and not close down," said Max.
- "Maybe."
- "It would be so cool if she becomes the new nurse of the school," smiled Dustin.
The others agreed with a nod. Will would prefer his mother to work in the school instead of in a center where girls didn't care of their futures as much as Joyce herself, for him, it was a dangerous waste of time.
When the group finished their lunch, they decided to go outside to enjoy the sun of the end of summer. Max left them to join Gary a bit farther.
- "It won't last," told Mike.
- "Max and Gary?" frowned Will.
- "Who else!"
- "But, why?" asked Bev. "They seem ok together."
- "I don't know, I don't feel a real chemistry, you know, like if, I don't know, they kiss and all, but, that's all, I mean, they look more like good friends than lovers, but that's just my opinion."
- "Are you jealous?" smirked Lucas.
- "Jealous!? Of what!?"
- "Of Gary."
- "What!? No way! I don't love Max! Not that way! She is my friend, nothing more! God, you can have stupid ideas sometimes!"
- "Ok, calm down," chuckled the black boy. "I just wanted to be sure."
- "It would be like dating my sister," told Mike with a disgusted face.
- "I would date your sister," told Dustin.
- "Yuck, disgusting!"
- "What! She is pretty!"
- "Yeah, she is," agreed Bev.
The four boys frowned at each other before looking at her.
- "Are you...like Max? Or just into girls?" asked Lucas.
- "None of it, I just know when a girl is pretty or not, and Nancy is pretty."
- "Yeah, ok. If you were into girls, you would tell us, right?"
- "Of course, but I'm not! I've other things to think than boyfriends or girlfriends."
- "Like what?" asked Mike.
- "Like...other things..."
The four boys nodded. They knew few things about Beverly's private life; the girl was very secretive, never talking about her family. They just knew she was living with her father, and that was all. They didn't know what her house was looking like, or even where it was. They just knew in which kind of districts she lived, not a safe district, surrounded by gangs, drug dealers, and other godfathers of crime. It was certainly why she never invited them in her house, too dangerous.
Max came back to them with a big smile.
- "His tongue tastes good?" smirked Mike.
- "Better than your dick."
Lucas and Dustin burst in laugh, Bev and Will stayed more modest, while Mike's face became more than red of embarrassment.
- "You can't answer like a normal person!?" replied the black-haired boy.
- "It's your fault! You gave me a stick to beat you with!"
- "Oh my god, Max, how old are you!? Eighty years old!?" mocked Dustin.
- "Fuck you! Don't be jealous of all my vocabularies!"
- "Oh, yes, we're totally jealous of your vocabularies, granny Maxine," joked Lucas.
Max showed them her middle finger with a forced smile, making laugh her friends.
- "You go skateboard after school?" asked Will.
- "Yeah, as last time we didn't because of...you know, we'll go tonight. You wanna come?" answered Bev.
- "If our presences don't bother you, yeah, it sounds cool," said Dustin.
- "Too bad it bothers me!" joked Max.
- "It's even better!" told Mike.
The group chuckled before going back in class. At the end of the day, they all joined each other before going at the skatepark, not knowing what would happen.
