I kept up the charade, following orders, going where I was told, night patrols in different bases. If they found out I knew the truth... what's to stop them from messing with my brain again?

Me and my men were assigned patrol in a base. At 0200 hours I had ordered my men to their quarters, I didn't need them to stay up with me.
At 0300 hours I continued to walk the empty corridors.

I heard footsteps behind me in the quiet corridor which had been empty a second ago.

"I don't suppose  you're going to tell me how you got in."  I said without looking at him.

"Nope." He smiled walking towards me.

"You shouldn't be here, James." I finally looked at him as he stood in front of me.

"I don't remember telling you my name." he smiled widely.

"James..." I said, "I remember bits.... Pieces." I shook my head at the floor.

"That's good." he placed his hands on each side of my face, forcing me to look back up at him.

"I don't remember much." I said.

"It's a start." He smiled softly, he leaned down and tried to kiss me. I quickly pulled away, dodging his affection.

"I might not be the same person you remember, and  I might never be her again." I said.

"You'll remember, let's get you home okay?" he said taking a step towards me again.

"These people killed me and tortured me, they made me something I'm not. I think I should stay and help you bring them down. From the inside." I said.

He clearly didn't like the idea, "I want you back home. Where I can keep you safe."

"I'm stronger than I used to be." I told him firmly. He crossed his arms across his chest and I heard him exhale in frustration.

"I can give you information to take back to S.H.I.E.L.D. you can trust me. I might not remember everything... but I know I want to take down Hydra." I insisted.

"What if they wipe your memories again?"  he countered.

"They have no idea what's going on in my head. I haven't given them a reason to doubt me."  I said. He dropped his arms to his sides in defeat and stared at me.

"Be careful." he said to which I nodded.  He gave me a sad smile and pushed a strand of hair out of my face with his right hand.

"That was the last thing I said to you before I lost you, and that was your same response too." he said softly.

"I wish I remembered more about you." I admitted. I felt his metal am on my waist and he leaned down to kiss my lips softly, I put one of my hands on his chest, the other behind his neck, he deepened the kiss, his stubble felt rough against my skin. He broke the kiss much too soon and moved his lips to my ear.

"I love you." He whispered. He took my hand from his chest and held it in his right hand, I looked  down at my hand in his as he played with my fingers, his skin felt warm against mine.

"I'm sorry." I closed my eyes.

"You have nothing to apologize for." He squeezed my hand softly.

"If they catch you here..." I trailed off.

"Is there anything I can say to convince you to come home right now?" James insisted.
