I Think He Knows

Oli was nervously waiting on one of the benches of the soccer field of Sierra's old university. There were only few students on the field, some are playing soccer. It was already six in the evening. He messaged her to meet him at 4pm. Pero dalawang oras na ang nakalipas, hindi pa rin ito dumarating.

He sighed. One hour later, there is still no sign of her.

He was about to stand when someone called his name.

"Oli."

He looked on his side and saw his best friend. The only woman who he loves for more than ten years.

He gave her a warm smile. Tumabi naman ito sa kanya at sabay silang naupong dalawa.

"I'm sorry..." Oli started, "I shouldn't have said those things."

Sierra laughed a little, "It's okay. I understand. Sometimes, we say some hurtful things because of too much emotions," She replied, assuring him.

Oli sighed and gave her a tight smile, "I'm sorry if I screwed up our friendship."

Sierra shook her head and held his hand. Oli smiled and intertwined their fingers too, "You didn't. You're a great friend. You're my only best friend. Nothing else will matter more than our friendship."

Oli bit his lip, her words lingering on his mind. He took a deep breath, mustering all the courage he had from all those years they have been friends. He needs to say something.

But then her diamond engagement ring caught his eyes again.

Rather than telling what he felt, his mouth spoke something else, "You're getting married next month. The ring suits on you."

Sierra giggled, "I know. Parang kailan lang, ang mga bata pa natin, we're still in college, figuring out some stuff, ngayon, you're an archaeologist and I'm going to start a family."

"You're going to have kids," Oli commented and both of them laughed.

Then Oli cried. He cried so hard that he tried to wipe his tears through his hand. He cried in front of his best friend.

Sierra's eyes were brimming with tears also, "Oli, why are you crying? You're making me cry too."

"I just..." Oli tried to wipe his tears but it won't go away. His heart was in too much pain - the only woman he loves throughout his entire life is going to get married... with somebody else, "I'm just so happy for you, Shie. You're going to build a new family, you're going to have kids... I'm going to miss you. I'm going to miss you, Shie."

Sierra stifled a light laugh as tears flow through her face too, "Come here."

She hugged him. Oli cried on her shoulders.

"I'm so sorry for not being a good friend," He told her in between sobs, "All I want is your happiness - and you're happy in getting married, that's enough for me."

Sierra freed herself from the hug and cupped his cheeks, "Even though I'm going to get married, we're still best friends, okay?"

Oli nodded, still in tears. But he knows deep inside he wasn't sure anymore.

As the pain is already deep.

Sierra smiled, trying to ease the moment, "Please don't cry. Saka, since I don't have any maid of honor, I don't know what it is called, man of honor or best man, but I want you to be it. You're my best friend. Will you?"

Oli nodded even though his heart aches so much.

After a few minutes, Sierra excused herself to go. They hugged each other for one last time before she left him alone, forever.

And it dawned on him, every missed opportunities...

Oli just cried even more.
