The Trap

Naru's Pov;

We watched as Dr. Knox spoke to his son on the phone from my office three weeks later.
"Son you need to leave the people of SPR alone. I've changed my will you'll get nothing! I've left everything in trust to you. A law firm is in charge of the trust and will maintain your lifestyle."
I could hear the son as well as his wife screaming about how unfair he was being. Mai was sitting next to me on the sofa in my office her head resting on my shoulder. Her hands were shaking, I could tell she was frightened.
"It'll be fine Mai. Everything is in place and we are sneaking out that evening. No one will be in the house."
She cuddled into me closing her eyes, and taking the first deep breath I had heard in awhile. The plan had to change as Mai's vision evolved showing us more. It wouldn't be safe to remain in the house as planned. Now Interpol was moving us to different safehouses.

Mai's Pov
A few days later;

Naru was being extra close to me these last few days. I was feeling a little smothered by it! The others have set up new wards. Lin made hitogata for each member of our household. and would place them in our bedrooms on the night of their attack. We would leave through a old hidden basement tunnel that went to a small outside storage area of the manor house we lived in. It hadn't been used in thirty years. So it made a perfect escape route for all of us. I was sitting in the garden, taking in the afternoon sun, so rare for London. When I felt someone next to me, most likely Naru as he rarely left me alone.
"I want to ask you something Mai?"
"Oh Gene you surprised me, I thought you were Naru. What did you want to ask me?"
"So Masako is being very odd lately, and Noll barely leaves your side. In fact if he wasn't speaking with Dad right now, he'd be right next to you. So what happened?"
"Naru told her it was me over everything. And she's been weird ever since."
"Mai are you out here."
"That's my cue to leave . I'll speak to you later."
"Oh Gene I'm glad you were with Mai, I don't want her alone, until these people are caught."
Gene left me alone again with Naru, damn traitor! When Naru wrapped his arms around me. Kissing my forehead.
"We need to talk about what happens when this is all done Mai. You'll be 18 in a few weeks and we need to talk about our future together."
"Naru, I told you I don't think we should have a future together."
He interrupted me,
"Mai why do you fight me on this I've told you over and over again I want this! It has nothing to do with what visions we've seen. I've said this multiple times over the years we are different people from what you've seen. When you saved Gene you saved and changed us all. Now I'm asking for a chance to let me love you and maybe you'll love me in return. Something beautiful might happen if you just let it in."
I leaned my forehead on his chest and closed my eyes.
"Okay Naru I'll try."

Three weeks later

Naru's Pov;

Everything was in motion and we were going forward with the plan. That evening I gathered the things I and Mai would need. Each of us separating into groups. Takigawa with Miss Matsuzaki and Father Brown. Gene with Lin and Miss Hara. Myself and Mai would be with our parents. I started looking for Mai checking her room first. I finally found her in the garden.
"Mai, are you okay?"
"Yes, Naru I'm fine, just enjoying what little sunshine we get here. As well as mom's flowers."
She had a detailed dream like the one that saved Gene's life. Giving us the day and time of the attack.
"We'll be leaving soon. We are going to go through our normal routine of the family dinner. Including our bedtime rituals."
She just nodded her head to me. I pulled her into my arms. She let out a long sigh, resting her head over my heart listening to it steady beat.
"We'll be fine Mai. Go get ready for dinner."
"Okay Naru. Just let me stay here for a bit longer. Hearing your heartbeat and feeling your warmth is comforting."
"I plan on holding you every chance I get if you'll let me."
"I said I would try Naru, and I will try. I promise you that I will."
