Chapter 41: A Fun Race

Chapter 41

Its been a long day (a/n: from where we begaN and I'll tell u all about it when i see u againnnn) from the practice of the swimming club, and everyone really outdid themselves.

Rei's butterfly swims has improve a lot today, normally he would focus more on calculation causing him to look rather nervous and stiff. But today, he looked natural and less nerve-recking to look at.

On the other hand, Nagisa looked really different this day. He would normally be bubbly, youthful and gain a fun personality but today, he looked determined and serious, like very serious. His breastroke has improved a lot too.

Makoto and Haruka, our two best swimmers in the club also outdid themselves today, just like the others, they improved on their swimming specialities too.

But your eyes was just stuck like glue to Haruka, his confusing you like a ton.

Earlier, he was empty-looking and looked rather dull but now, his smiling- yes, you heard me. Smiling. Even while practicing, his smile never comes off from his lips, like glue.

Every now and then, you always would nudge and hit Gou's arm 'out of the blue' using your elbow. She would always greet you with a scowling expression. "What's with you today, squid?! Did I did something wrong?"

You grin at her and mouthed, "Sorry." at her. She crosses her arms at you and mirrors your grin on her thin rosy lips, "Your lucky that you're my best friend, your going to taste your own medicing if you aren't."

"Oh Gou-chan. What would I do without you?"

Honestly, you had no entirely clue why you kept on continously nudging Gou's arm, thinking about it makes you look like a complete idiot.

Maybe its because you want to tell her something but your guts tells you that you shouldn't spit words about your thoughts and feeling right now. So you just follow.

"Squid." someone called, and that very same time, someone was walking up to you with wet-sound footsteps.

Turning your head, goosebumps raised and you felt yourself jump your soul out. "A-Ah, yes??.. Haru-kun?" you squeak beneath your voice, he was towering above you like you were just a small, innocent cub.

He extended his arm with his hand calling for yours. "Race with me?" he asks and you were just left with amusement. You entirely had no clue what to say and how to reply.

"I thought he was angry at me?.." your thoughts ran through your mind. You snapped out yourself and suddenly you felt your lips twitch into a curve, "Sure..!"

You heaved a deep sigh while your eyes was just staring furiously at the clear, fresh and blue water. The water's reflection of your face made you froze for a moment, you coudn't believe that Haruka wasn't in a bad mood.

"I wonder how that happened..?"

Shaking off your head from pondering too much thoughts, you streched your arms and stopped streching when you felt your fingertips touch your toes while your back is curved, ready to swim.

"Go squiddo!" you hear Gou squirm at the side, your heart beating faster now from how nerve-recking this moment was. It was going to be you first time racing with someone in swmming.

Before the whistle blew, Rei reminded you two that both of you can do any type of swimming to race. And whoever touches the wall on the other side of the lane, wins. You wanted to swim freestyle, like Haruka.

"Damn, why does this feel like the actual swimming tournament?! Its so-"

The whistle blew loudly, and in the glimpse of your eyes, you saw Haruka quickly dived in the pool like the superhero, Flash.

And as he did, you did the same thing and dived in. You hoped that you were going faster ahead than him, your body rolled on one side to another then always turning to side to the arm that is currently pulling in. You kept your head in a neutral position, faced down except when breathing.

The water splashing onto your face, your feet paddling non-stop and your arms endlessly pulling in made you feel so determined to win this fun race of yours and Haruka. You felt yourself smile underwater.

Ever since you joined the swimming club, you never expected to meet such good friends that was always there for you since day one. You also never expected that you would join such as a big prefectural tournament for swimmers.

Well, you know what they say- expect the unexpected.

While already struggling to swim beneath the water, you could hear Gou continously squiriming like a kid cheering for someone popular. And Makoto and Nagisa clapping, excited to see who would win.

"Go! Go! Go Squiddo!"

"Wow! I never knew (Y/n)-san swims freestyle like Haru-chan!"

"Keep going!!"

All this sweet comments and praise made you smile even wider, perhaps only mentally but you felt the unconditional happiness within you, it was pleasuring.

.

You lifted up your head and quickly wiped and brushed off all the hair on your face, and all the remaining drops of water that was keeping you from opening your eyes.

You looked around and saw Haruka nowhere to be found.

But your heard wet footsteps leading you way instead. "Good job, squiddo! That was awesome!" Nagisa says while jumping, you were suprised that he didn't slid off from the water, he could have gotten hurt if he did.

You hear Makoto clapping non-stop and it made you twitch a smile while climbing out from the pool. "For a beginner like you in swimming, you learned two types of swimming so fast, squid. I'm proud of you."

"Its nothing guys.." you laugh it all off as their praises and compliments made your fair cheeks give a tint of red color. "..where's water-addict, though? And, who won?" you ask while glancing here and there.

Then Gou suddenly giggles at you. "His in the boy's locker room, silly. This may sound confusing but he didn't really raced with you, he made you swim into the pool all alone!"

"W-What?! But I just saw him dive in first!"

"Yeah, but he quickly stopped swimmimg and climbed out of the pool and he just watched you swam, just like us." Gou explains while giggling between her phrases. "You looked super determined in there!" she bursted her laughter out.

You rolled your orbs and shook off your head. "God, what kind of friends do I have?"

"But you were amazing in the water, squiddo. I'm also proud of you!"
