The ghost told Virginia that his wife was very simple, a bad cook and a bad housekeeper as well. He did kill his wife but her brothers-in-law had starved him to death.
Virginia thought that the ghost was hungry and offered him a sandwich which he declined as he never ate food as a ghost. He complimented Virginia for her good manners and passed disparaging comments on her family. Feeling annoyed, Virginia told him that it was he who was rude to them. She held him responsible for stealing her paints to colour the bloodstain. She felt disgusted and wished to leave the room.
