American Minister Mr. Hiram B. Otis bought Canterville Chase which everyone believed to be a haunted place. Lord Canterville , the owner of the mansion, did not conceal this fact and dissuade Otis from buying it.
He(Lord Canterville) frankly told him (Mr.Otis) that the ghost had been seen by many people including his grandaunt, the Dowager Ducchess of Bolton who was frightened into a fit from which she never recovered. Lady Canterville too had heard strange and mysterious voices and could not sleep.
Even the servants didn't stay there. But Mr Otis refused to believe the ghost. He purchased Canterville Chase .
