The ghost was excited to discover that he had a distant connection with the Duke of Chesire, Virginia's lover. His granduncle Lord Stilton had laid a bet to play dice with the Canterville ghost. The ghost was anxious to show that he had not lost influence over the Stiltons.
Accordingly, he made arrangements to appear before the young Duke at the last moment, however, the terror of the twins prevented him from leaving his room and the young Duke slept in peace.
