When it was tea time, Virginia did not come down. Mrs Otis thought she might be in the garden to get the flowers. The fact that she was still not found at dinner time scared the Otis family.
They looked for her everywhere, including all the servants at the mansion but Virginia was nowhere to be found. She was searched for in gypsy camp also but to no avail.
Virginia's brother searched her in the district. Mr Otis rode off to Ascot, looking for his daughter.
The Duke followed him and they went together to the railway station . Mr Otis also visited Bexley village but could not find Virginia. The search, again, proved to be futile..
They returned home at eleven thirty, empty-handed. Mr Otis ordered everybody to go to bed saying that nothing could be done that night and promised that he would telegraph in the morning to Scotland Yard to send some detectives.
