Virginia, while passing through the tapestry chamber, saw the ghost looking miserably sad. She felt sorry for him and tried to cheer him up. She also mentioned to the ghost that, if he would behave himself, then no one in the Otis family would trouble him. However, the ghost mentioned that to cause mischief was his only purpose in life, something to which Virginia strongly disagreed.
