Virginia told her father very quietly that she had been with the ghost and he was dead now.
He had been very wicked, but was really sorry for all that he had done.
He gave her a box of jewels before he died. The whole family gazed at her with mute amazement.
She led them through a narrow secret door to a little room. There they saw the skeleton of Sir Simon, the Canterville ghost.
Virginia knelt down besides the skeleton and prayed silently and wept for him. The family looked on in wonder at the terrible tragedy whose secret was now out.
One of the twins looked outside and exclaimed that the withered almond tree had blossomed.
Virginia rose to her feet and said that God had forgiven him.
A beautiful light illuminated her face.
