I couldn't stop smiling as I stared at the beautiful ring on my finger. The diamond was huge and bigger than anything I would ever pick out. I admired the simplicity of it. The way the single diamond sparkles when I moved my hand just slightly. As I was admiring my engagement ring, I felt a hand on my on knee and I looked over the driver side of the car. I smiled at my new fiancé.
"You know I'm the one who gave you that so why don't you stare at me?" My fiancé giggled squeezing my knee looking back and forth between me and the road.
"I know, but it's so beautiful!" I put my hand out in front me to admire it more. "Ben and Riley Hill. Mrs. Hill. I love it!" Ben grabbed my hand and brought it to his lips, kissing my hand. He held my hand and he sat it in his lap, continuing to drive.
"It's been over a week and you still act like it happens an hour ago" Ben stated.
"Well ya! Why can't I get excited for our future! Ben baby, we are going to be together forever. Your stuck with me now!" I reached over and kissed his cheek and I heard him laugh.
We were driving to have dinner with a couple of friends. They knew we were engaged but we haven't hung out with them since so it was an exciting night. Ben and I were dressed up, ready for a nice dinner and bar hoping later.
I met Ben at university. I was studying music and he was studying English. He wanted to teach high school students that words were beautiful and reading was a great way to escape the world. I didn't know what I wanted to do except produce music. We met at a bar, yes, a bar. Both of our groups of friends we came with were dancing like crazy while we stood by the bar. We talked all night and haven't stoped talking since. We were about to graduate soon and he proposed just a couple weeks ago.
I looked out my window at the passing cars and buildings. It was pouring out, but I loved the rain. It was peaceful and the sound calmed me. The only thing I hated about it was how it messed up my hair.
"You ok?" Ben asked with concern in his voice.
"Ya. Just thinking." I kept staring out the window.
"About?"
I let out a deep sigh and turned towards him. "I don't know what to do once we graduate. I know I want to keep making music, but you have to move to LA or god knows where to even be a producer. I don't know where to start." I looked at my hands in my lap and started to play with my ring.
Ben reaches over and started to play with hair, scratching my head a little. "Hey, we'll figure something out. I've got a couple interviews for some teaching jobs and will see what the music scene is in those towns. Plus, your sending your music to big producers so your putting your name out there! You got this Riley!"
I put my hand on his and brought it to my mouth and kissed it.
"You always know exactly what to say! God I love you!" I stared and him with the most love I have ever had with anyone! He was my rock, the one who supported me no matter what.
We continued driving in the rain, almost to the restaurant. I was excited to get out and hang out with friends. Let loose a little.
We were sitting at a stoplight, singing along to the radio when the light turned green. Ben started to go when I noticed the bright light outside his window. Time seemed to slow down as I noticed the car speeding towards his side of the car. The last thing I remember was Ben turning towards me, eyes full of...not sadness...but love.
I remember screaming.
Then my world changed forever.
