Chapter 11—Quit Being a Pussy

{ l u k e }

          “So are you taking anyone to the dance?” Michael questioned as we walked down the hallway of our school, pushing past lingering students as we made our way towards the front doors.

          “I don’t know,” I responded truthfully, pushing open the heavy black door to step outside. The clouds were hiding the sun every now and then, but it was a fairly nice afternoon. I liked it.

          Michael scoffed as we approached my car. “Right,” he said sarcastically with a roll of his eyes. “I’m pretty sure I have a good idea on who you wanna ask.”

          I pursed my lips, biting my lip ring as I used my keys to unlock the doors before we got in. As I started up the car, I replied to Michael, “And who would that be?”

          “Autumn—duh.”

          An airy chuckle escaped my lips at the mention of the fierce girl, an image of her face flashing through my mind as I pulled the car out of the parking space. As much as I didn’t really want to admit it, Michael was right. There was, truthfully, only one girl I would like to take to our school’s Christmas dance, and it was Autumn.

          “Yeah, well,” I started with a sigh, making a left turn down the road. “I’m not sure if she’d be willing to go with me,” I confessed.

          I heard Michael snort. “Why?” he asked, curiosity lacing his voice. “You told me you guys have kissed a couple of times. No girl would kiss a guy unless she liked him or if she was a slut. And, dude, Autumn doesn’t even give off the slightest slutty vibe.”

          A scoff escaped me, even thought what Michael was saying was true. Autumn was most definitely not a slut. If anything, she seemed like the exact opposite. “I know that.”

          “If you know that,” my red haired friend stressed, “then why the fuck won’t you ask her to the dance? It’s this weekend and I’m sure she’s gonna wanna go out and buy a dress and shit.”

          Glancing at Michael, I saw that he was completely serious and I let out a sigh. He was right—I did want to ask Autumn to the dance, no one else. But I guess I was—and I would never admit this out loud—a bit intimidated by the fact that Autumn could just blatantly reject the offer—which we all are aware of the fact that she is more than capable of doing so.

          She was a frightening female.

          “Because she’ll probably say no,” I finally answered Michael, turning the car into my neighborhood street.

          “Quit being a pussy and grow some damn balls, Luke,” Michael declared as I pulled the car into my driveway, right behind Mum’s car.

          I couldn’t help but roll my eyes as I pulled out the keys. “Thanks for the words of encouragement, Mike,” I replied, sarcasm dripping heavily from my voice as we stepped out of my car.
