Chapter 23—Okay
{ a u t u m n }
"Babe, you look good in anything."
I let out a groan, tossing the shirt back in the drawer as I turned to glare at Luke, hands on my hips as he innocently stayed lying upside down on my bed, head hanging off the edge. "You're literally no help whatsoever," I chastised, shaking my head as I stomped over to my closet. "Agh, I wish Dani and Erica weren't so damn busy."
"Ouch," Luke chuckled, not at all offended by my statement as I sifted through my clothes, trying to find something decent to wear as my back faced him. "Why are you worrying so much, anyway? 'S just your dad."
"Exactly!" I exclaimed, turning around to face him as I threw my hands up in the air in frustration. "I haven't seen him in years and we're gonna have lunch now and I wanna look, like, presentable to show—"
I instantly cut myself off with a sharp exhale, all the air deflating out of my as my hands dropped to my side, left hand reaching up to scratch at my hairline as I averted my gaze from Luke. The boy had gotten off my bed amidst my mini rant, sauntering over to my frazzled state. "Shh, Auttie," Luke hushed, tall body looming over me as his hands immediately reached up to cup my face.
His touch instantly relaxed me, calloused fingers against my skin as the cool metal of his ring contrasted against my warm cheeks. I released a small, quiet breath as my eyes looked up at Luke through my lashes, lips pressing together as his bright blue eyes met mine.
Luke's expression was relaxed as I felt his thumbs brush along my cheekbones, his baby blues flickering down to my lips for a split second before looking back up at my eyes. "You're fine, Autumn; no matter what you wear, you're gonna look great and your dad is going to be sorry that he ever walked out of your life. The guy's gonna beat himself up over the fact that he couldn't watch his cute little daughter grow into this beautiful girl that's standing in front of me right now."
The genuine sincerity behind his words immediately caused flushed heat to travel up my neck and spread over my cheeks, warming them greatly as I averted my gaze from Luke's intense one, looking down at my feet. His words caused my stomach to churn in the best of ways, a kaleidoscope of butterflies fluttering everywhere as my lower lip pulled into my mouth.
"Hey, look at me," Luke demanded softly, using his hands to tilt my head up so my eyes met his once more, breath hitching in my throat at the sight of his concentrated look. "Don't worry about what to wear, okay? Don't worry at all," he advised wisely, expression serious as his right thumb softly brushed along my lower lip. "And I know you're nervous, but it's all going to be fine. You're absolutely fine."
I inhaled deeply, softly at Luke's words, gratitude flowing through me of the fact that I have, quite literally, the best boyfriend ever. Along with that, I'm pretty sure this intense feeling of another very specific emotion was swirling in the pit of my stomach and deep in my heart, and the words were on the tip of my tongue as I parted my lips to say them.
But I chickened out, opting for a grateful smile as I mumbled a quiet, "Thank you."
Luke returned the smile, his dimples in view. "'Course, baby," he murmured, before using his hands on my face to pull me in to capture my lower lip in a sucking kiss.
