I slowly opened my eyes as my body floats down slowly. Red feathers were surrounding me. The feathers collided with my body as I transcend to the ground, soft and fluffy. The walls were black and the yellowish lights where dim as a figure was seen on the other side of the glass in front of me. I slowly get up and walk towards the giant window. The glass manipulated itself for me to pass through.

"Is this the afterlife?" she asked.

"You could say that." the man said as he stepped closer. He held my hand as the feathers around me flew towards my body. The feathers became part of my skin now. "So you're a Cardinal? That's new," he said with his smile. His dimples were damn cute. He removes his gloves and reveals that he has some feathers too.

"Where am I exactly? What am I? What are you?" I asked as I looked at my new bird-like features.

"Too many questions at once. You just ended your life as a human. Come let's have a drink. By the way, my name is Namjoon." he said as he guided me to the hallway. The hall looked fairly similar to the room I was in before, only more decorated. There were different pieces of art. They were symbolic of death, life, and being reborn in away.  "These are magnificent art pieces. What money did you have to buy them?" I asked

"Buy them? No no no, Taehyung painted them. Jungkook helped with some. You'll meet them later." he said.

"Oh I just love meeting new people," I rolled my eyes sarcastically.

Now that I think of it...Taehyung? Where have I heard that name?

"Do you remember what happened in the last 15 minutes?" Namjoon asks me as he sat me down at a counter, preparing us drinks.

"I....I was at school and I died. Wait I was calling my mom, and then I jumped..Oh shit." I realized as Namjoon slid over a teacup to me. "Have some chamomile, it'll calm you down," he said. I think this is the best tea I've ever had.

"It's good, thank you. Can you please tell me what's going on?" I asked. Namjoon nodded with his teacup and sat down.

"It's gonna be a lot to take in. But as you know, you are dead. Those who die are reborn into a new life after they stay up in 'heaven', that's what humans like to call it. For the ones who need to be punished for their terrible deeds, the go in what you call 'hell' for a bit. We are none of those." Namjoon explained.

"Than what are we? How is there an in-between? Are we lost souls or something?" I asked.

"As punishment for ending our lives too early, we are never going to be reborn. Death is supposed to be out of control. That means dying of natural causes, getting in an accident, or being murdered by another human. Our role is to judge who gets sent to the black or the white. The black is hell and the white is heaven, in human terms." He explained. I was very fascinated by this, but it saddens me that I fucked up.

"We are the Grim Alliance, to answer your question."

"We are grim? Grim reapers?" I asked

"Yeah, I guess. The Grim Alliance sounds cooler." he chuckled

We both sip our tea.

"We also collect the souls safely from other entities such as demons, who feed on souls. More on that later. It's not your concern now. Right now I am in charge of The Grim Alliance. Our whole society doesn't have a name, but just has teams of people working together. We just have the coolest names." he said.

"This sounds fun! I'm excited I'll be doing this for eternity!" I said jumping out of my chair. Namjoon looked at me with concern. "You may be excited now, as I once was. You're gonna find out the dark parts of this job. I've been doing this for a while. I've accepted my fate, but I'm sad that I'll never get to be reborn." He said looking down at his cup. I looked out his feathers then at mine.

"Earlier you said I was a Cardinal, what does that mean exactly? Why do we have feathers?" I asked.

"I was wondering what the hell kinda hybrid society I was in too. When we go in the real world to collect souls, the most physical form we can be in to see humans is as an animal. Birds are the most reliable. As you can see, I am a barn owl." he explained and his body soon turned into a barn owl and he flew around the room. His body morphed back into a human. "Whooaaaaa" my eyes must have lit up like the sun.

"When we are in this form, humans can't see us, unless someone is close to death or another type of entity, like an angel or demon," he explained. A clock strikes 11 PM. There was a blue glow as a hawk flys from a portal. The hawk shifts back into a tall, built man. His body didn't match his bunny-like grin. "I'm back. There were no problems." He reported to Namjoon.

"That's great. Can you show f/n to her room? She'll be sharing with Taehyung." Namjoon said.

"No problem. I'll give you the reports in about an hour." Jungkook reported.

"Alright, goodnight Jungkook and f/n"

"Goodnight...wait I never told you my name," I questioned.

Jungkook lead me down the hall in silence. It wasn't tension, we didn't know how to start the conversation. "So how long have you been here? Did Joon tell you everything?" he asked quietly.

"Um yeah. I've been here for about 20 minutes."

"Oh shit, so you just died? I'm sorry you couldn't pass on. And you're so young! How old are you?" he asked.

"I mean I was in high school," I said.

"Damn society really got fucked all the years I've been here."

"How long have you been here?" I asked

"In their morning. Here is your room. You'll be sharing with Taehyung. He's very nice...yet he is interesting. He's been painting for 3 days straight. If you can get him to sleep, that would be great." Jungkook explained.

"But I'm bad at talking. I never had anyone to talk to." I mumbled.

"Were you bullied?" He asked. I nodded. "Damn teens. You know, you could always be a bird and shit on their heads as karma. Maybe even chase them. Don't tell Namjoon I told you that." Jungkook winked as he headed off to bed. I like him, no one but my mom has treated me this comforting. I took a deep breath before stepping inside. I could hear classical music through the door.
