Merida POV
After the moment Hiccup and I shared on the archery field, we flew in silence to Berk. We spotted Astrid flying around on her dragon.
"Do you ever wonder how she can see us?" Hiccup asked. "Jack and the others are guardians but Astrid is just human. No one else has been able to."
"I've never really thought about it." I shrugged. "Maybe she's special."
"Maybe..." He didn't seem convinced but I figured we should stay focused. I flew over to Astrid, narrowly avoiding getting run into by a dragon. We all landed in a clearing.
"So did you get your memories back yet?" Astrid asked as she ran a hand over her dragon's neck. I shook my head and she sighed.
"You knew us before, right?" Hiccup asked earning a nod. "Maybe you could tell us about what our lives were like before."
"Well, it's worth a shot." She glanced nervously between us. "Hiccup, you and I have known each other practically our whole lives. We used to train to kill dragons until you met Toothless. You taught everyone in Berk how to train dragons instead of killing them. You showed me how to love. And then, you went to the Guardian's school and everything changed. We grew apart and you began to find yourself. You made sure you were capable of protecting yourself with or without a dragon. I left for a while but I couldn't stay away. I went back and got to see you graduate and become a guardian." She spoke about Hiccup with so much love. I felt out of place.
"Astrid were we...are we supposed to be together?" He asked nervously, his eyes darting to me.
"Maybe in another life, we would have ruled Berk together and lived happily ever after." She looked at him with longing but only for a moment. "We were together once but we grew apart. You had feelings for someone else."
"Where do I fit into all of this?" I wondered, frowning.
"You are someone else." My jaw dropped at the new information. I had felt something for Hiccup but I never imagined he felt the same way. I had assumed our moment was a one-time thing but maybe, we had something. "Listen, in situations like this feelings can get tangled easily but you two have a connection and when you died, Merida, it broke him."
"Toothless is my dragon?"Hiccup asked not contributing to the current topic. Astrid looked at him skeptically before nodding. "Where would I be able to find him?" Astrid let out a huge whistle and seconds later a black dragon was circling around us. He rushed over to Hiccup and tackled him to the ground. I laughed as the dragon slobbered all over him. Astrid helped him up and showed him what to do and it was clear that Hiccup was a natural. After flying around the sky for a few minutes he came back down and held out his hand for me.
"Are you sure?" I asked nervously.
"You scared?" He taunted. I rolled my eyes and climbed onto the dragon behind him. I wrapped my arms around his torso and held on tight as the dragon took off. It was a whole different feeling than flying on my own and it was intimidating. Toothless did loops and I squealed as I felt the rush of adrenaline. Soon Toothless slowed down and we just coasted over the water.
"Hiccup...About what Astrid was saying..." I hated talking about my feelings but, I needed to know. "Do you really think you could love me?" I asked nervously.
"Honestly, I think I already do."
