"What is that?" He asked, watching her wiggle and kick at the shadows of oak leaves against the sun. She giggled and watched him, having never seen shadows before. He pointed at the shadows, just as a breeze picked up and rustled the leaves, the shadows themselves dancing along her legs as her eyes lit up.
He smiled warmly. Around her she had her ABC blocks to play with as well as a plush bunny. Under the table of the main dining floor, Leon had her diaper bag and her carrier, as well as some extra soft foods for her lunch and snack if she got hungry. He was, as of the moment, just enjoying a nice, blissfully quiet morning.
But it would only be so brief.
"Hey Leon," He heard Hunnigan's voice on the phone. "You have incoming company in an hour."
Leon's heart dropped. So soon? He was still on vacation! He asked, "Who are they?"
"Chris Redfield and Rebecca Chambers," Hunnigan replied, "They asked me to locate you."
Leon's temper briefly soared. He wanted to be angry, truth be told. He was not keen on Chris seeing his girl anytime soon. He was still unsure of how the other would feel about her, and how he learned of her birth.
He asked, "There's no way to stall them is there?"
Hunnigan answered, "I tried to tell them that you were not seeing anyone, but they insisted that it was an emergency."
Leon frowned. "Emergency or not I don't want to see them."
Hunnigan frowned. She suggested, "Then get Cristiana settled into your room and I'll play some music for her. I'll do what I can to help out."
Leon nodded. He hung up and picked up Cristiana. He kissed her head and told her, "Nappy time."
Cristi didn't fuss much until she was put into the carrier. As her toys were plucked up, she whimpered and started crying. It broke Leon's heart, hearing his baby crying. He hushed her as gently as he could, "It's okay baby. A brief little nap and we'll play some more okay?"
Cristi sniffled and held onto her bunny. Leon smiled. He gathered what he could and hurried the baby to their room. All the while he set her on the bed and the bag to the side, rocking her carrier as Hunnigan played music. It was easy, getting her to fall asleep. However, just to be sure, he spent a solid half hour rocking her carrier as she snoozed, slowing down to a stop once he was sure she was asleep.
He handed her a sweater of his that had his smell, and she settled down to a full sleep. He exhaled silently; good, that should be enough...for now.
He grimaced and headed downstairs, first to the men's room to splash hot water on his face, then turned to the barkeep and whispered a plan to her; help him pretend he had been drinking, and hope that they leave him alone. She wasn't keen on the idea, but Leon explained that he had paid vacation promised to him by the President himself, and that he was wanting to use it exactly as the man intended it to be.
Reluctantly she agreed, and handed him what was the small remains of a Jack Daniels and a shot glass. Leon balked at the drink, afraid that it would affect Cristiana if he fed her. However, pushing it aside, he downed one shot...then another. And patiently...dreadfully, he waited for the company.
Chris's heavy boots told him their arrival, and Rebecca's softer steps. Out of acting sass, he turned to them.
"Careful you don't scare the locals. Your stealth's for shit."
He heard Chris behind him: "It's a little early to be that deep in the bottle Leon."
Leon so wished he was shit-faced drunk. He did NOT want to deal with Chris at a time like this. He turned, putting on his best drunkard face.
