I looked up at Wiley's grinning face, feeling astonishment and confusion cross over my own.
"What are you doing here? Isn't everybody supposed to be on the scavenger hunt?" I directed my second question towards Rochelle.
She opened her mouth to reply but was interrupted by a new voice, "What's all the noise about? It's giving me a headache!" exclaimed Josie as she staggered towards us, still in her pajamas. "What's that little door?"
I stopped laughing at her SpongeBob pj bottoms. I turned around and realized that I had left the door open.
"Oh, that. Um..."
"That's just a little closet, nothing big," Rochelle interrupted me, "Let's get you back to bed, Josie. You look horrible." It was true, Josie looked even worse than she did last night.
Rochelle made her way towards Josie, casually kicking the door closed on the way. Josie seemed disoriented but made no protest as Rochelle guided her back to her room.
I sighed in relief until somebody cleared their throat and reminded me of another presence.
Oh great. I forgot about Wiley.
I closed my eyes and counted to ten. Maybe he'd disappear if I concentrated hard enough. I opened my eyes; he was still there and staring at me strangely.
"Hey," I said awkwardly.
Wiley said nothing
"Well, I think I should be going. You know to check on Josie."
Still no response.
I started to move past him but Wiley stuck a hand out to stop me. I looked up at him, startled.
One of his eyebrows quirked as he said, "I didn't forget about you and Rochelle coming out of very strange closet." He gestured to the door behind me.
I grabbed his Wiley's wrist and tried to lead him away, but he easily twisted out of my grasp. He walked back to the door, threw it open, and crawled inside before I could stop him.
"Wow! This place is cool!" Wiley's sarcastic voice drifted to me from inside. I exhaled in defeat and crawled in after him.
Wiley sat cross-legged on the floor, looking around the room with raised eyebrows.
"So what's the story with this room?" he asked me. He held one of the many newspaper clippings that were pinned to the wall.
"You know, I don't really know anything. I kind of just stumbled upon it. Kind of lucky, I guess." Wow, did I really just lie that horribly?
Wiley gave me a flat look that told me he didn't buy it for a second. I caved and told him the story I told Rochelle.
He sat back when I was finished, seeming to process it all.
"So, this is like some mystery house, huh? I'm glad my parents picked this house to exile me to," Wiley said.
I just rolled my eyes and turned to climb back out of the room. I could hear
"So what are we going to do about this?" I jumped, not aware that Wiley had followed me all the way downstairs.
I glared at him, "What I'm going to do," I said, emphasizing the 'I', "is figure out what happened. It shouldn't be too hard, just a little bit of research in the library."
I might've left out something else; the diary. It would be the most reliable source of information.
Speaking of which, "I have to go, Wiley."
I grabbed an apple and headed back upstairs, not even waiting to hear his response.
Josie and Rochelle were preoccupied on Rochelle's laptop so I quickly retrieved the diary from my hiding spot and exited the room. Since almost everyone was gone for the scavenger hunt, it wasn't hard to find a secluded spot to read. I settled for the lounge area downstairs and opened the page to read:
January 21, 1905
Dear Diary,
Not much has happened in the last few days. I have been keeping within the Academy's walls, not wanting to encounter the two scary men from the forest. I have shown Oliver and the girls the room I found. The girls thought it was fascinating while Oliver was unimpressed. I suppose after finding the attic room recently, he was not as excited. Oliver and I plan to go into the forest again. Maybe to look for the hut. I will write more after I get back. E. Trump.
"There's an attic room too? Why didn't you tell me about this? I want to check it out." A voice said from behind me.
I yelped and spun around. Wiley was standing over me, his eyes focused on the book in my hands. I glared at him and snapped the book shut. Slowly, Wiley's eyes slid over until they met mine.
"What?" he questioned.
"It's rude to read over other people's shoulders," I pointed out.
"It's rude to withhold important information," He shot back.
"I didn't withhold information, this is the first I've read about an attic room," I explained.
"What about the diary, huh? Wasn't planning on telling me that, were you?" He demanded.
"I didn't have to tell you about this," I huffed, "You weren't even supposed to know about the first room! You were supposed to be gone, on the scavenger hunt."
"I'm hurt," Wiley had an injured expression.
I rolled my eyes, "Whatever, I'm going to find the attic room. Feel free to not join me."
