***Hey everybody i hope your holidays are going well.****
"Wait up!" Wiley called after me. I ignored him and continued on.
"You're not very nice, you know." I jumped when I heard a sudden voice in my ear. I turned to see Wiley standing behind me with a smirk on his face. "You are a little jumpy though aren't you?"
I scowled at him, "If you didn't sneak up on me all the time I wouldn't be jumpy."
I spun on my heel and stomped out of the room.
Twenty minutes later and I still hadn't found a door that led to the attic. I ended up in the lounge room and slumped to the floor in frustration.
"Having trouble finding something?"
I couldn't help flinching a little and hoped Wiley didn't notice. He stood above me, grinning.
"What do you want?" I asked.
"Nothing, I just asked a simple question and judging by your expression I take it that you haven't found the way to the attic."
"So what?" I shot back, "It's not like you could find it either and I know you were looking for it too. I heard you get in trouble with Ms. Bates." Ms. Bates was the school nurse and also the only adult who was left behind while everybody else went on the scavenger hunt. I heard Wiley get caught by her and I only managed to sneak by.
"Actually, I wasn't looking. I was waiting for you to find it but obviously you're incapable of that."
Ah! He got on my nerves like nobody else did!
"Maybe we should check out the diary again," Wiley continued.
"No chance. The diary is in a safe hidden place where you won't be able to find it." Okay, maybe between my mattresses wasn't the best place to hide the diary but it's not like Wiley would ever be in my room to look for it anyway.
Wiley suddenly grabbed my hand and pulled me to my feet. "Let's go check out the other room then. There might be something else in it that you missed." I ignored the jibe and followed him up the stairs, resisting the urge to yank my hand away.
I was already half way through the door when we heard voices, "Alright kids, dinner will be in half and hour and the winners of the scavenger hunt will get rewarded at the dinner." Ms. Brown's voice drifted up the stairs.
Everybody must be back form the scavenger hunt now. I heard pounding on the stairs which meant people were heading towards us. I quickly crawled all the way through. To my dismay, Wiley also climbed in, pulling the door closed behind him.
"Great, now we're stuck in here for the next half hour," I groaned as I heard voices on the other side.
Wiley scooted over to the wall, located the flashlight, and clicked it on. "We might as well take advantage of this and study this more closely." Wiley said. I mumbled a response and we both scooted over to the wall of newspaper clippings. "There's this one newspaper clipping had the exact date that the school was closed down." I told Wiley. "It was over here somewhere..." I trailed off as I studied the wall more closely.
The clippings seemed to be rearranged and there were more on the floor than when I first found them. Also, I noticed that the big newspaper clipping was now crumbled and only half of it remained on the wall. I carefully pried it loose and turned it around. On the back, written in big letters were the words: Be more careful next time. Had that been there before?
"What is it?" Wiley asked.
In his hands were more clippings that he had taken off the wall. He dropped them all and took the one I held from my hands.
"That's strange," Wiley muttered, almost to himself. "Why would this be here and not..." He stopped.
I looked curiously at him but said nothing. What had he been about to say?
I realized then, that I knew nothing about him and vice versa.
"So Wiley, why did you come to this school?" He looked up at the sudden change in conversation.
"That's a little random. I came to this school because my parents don't like kids. They had me by accident and never really grew to like me. I was mostly raised by nannies since the time I came home from the hospital. Anyway, I got into this fight at school and was expelled, that obviously made my parents furious and they threatened to send me to military school. Instead, I compromised boarding school and they agreed. This was the farthest away I could get and now we're both happy."
I gaped at him. He told his whole life story in five minutes and with the amount of emotion somebody would have talking about the weather.
He chuckled at my expression, "So that's my story, what's yours?"
I told him of how my parents loved to travel the world, and how after living in seventeen different countries I got tired of it. Eventually I persuaded them to let me attend a boarding school. While I told the story, I was absently tracing the wall and pulling off the papers. I noticed an outline of a door in the wall where Wiley had already taken most of the papers off.
I stopped short and sat up. "Look at that outline in the wall. Doesn't it look like a door?" I asked Wiley.
He also sat up and shone the flashlight on what I was pointing at.
"Yeah, I guess you're right. It does look like a little door."
He moved over closer to the wall and took something out of his pocket. I saw the gleam in the light and recognized it as a pocket knife.
Wiley grinned at me, "I always keep it handy."
Then he worked on cutting out the clay that was imbedded in the door, keeping it closed. Then we both used our strength to pull the door open.
I picked up the flashlight from where Wiley dropped it on the floor. I shone it at the open door and we both peered through. Was there a hidden room within the hidden room?
