Sadie's POV
I read through the diary really fast, devouring the words as fast as the girl down the table was her food.
I was in the middle of reading when a hand suddenly appeared on the page. I squeaked in surprise and threw my hands out, knocking the diary to the floor.
I bent down to grab my book; it fell in a pile of food so now the pages were sticky. Gross.
"Sorry about that, I didn't mean to scare you," a deep voice startled me.
I jerked my head up and came face to face with a teenaged boy. He had sandy brown hair and hazel eyes. He grinned at me from across the table. I struggled to remember what he had said.
"It's okay; I was just too consumed with my book." I blurted out.
He smirked, "I could see that. Mind my asking what book it is?"
I shoved the book under the table and answered, "Oh it's nothing special. Just a mystery novel," I said quickly.
The guy raised his eyebrows but made no comment about my obvious lie. Instead, he stuck his hand across the table.
"I'm Wiley Foxx."
I slowly placed my hand in his soft ones and shook it.
"I'm Sadie Flynn."
Wiley nodded before turning his attention back to his food and started eating it. More like inhaling it. I watched in amazement at how fast he was eating. The girl down the table had nothing on him. I realized I was staring so I slid off the bench and hurried out of the dining hall.
In my haste, I didn't notice a group of boys rushing into the room and was nearly trampled by them.
"Sorry." I muttered but they paid no attention to me.
They were too busy laughing and I saw a couple of them ogling the food tables. I rolled my eyes and left the dining hall.
Even though I was only here a day before the boys came, it was going to feel a lot different and take some adjusting to.
After hiding the diary in my room, I made my way down the hall that led to the secret room.
Making sure nobody was looking; I crawled into the small space and pulled the door shut. This time I came prepared. I clicked on my flashlight and looked around the room.
I have been waiting to revisit since I left the first time and now it seemed more amazing than when I first discovered the room. I relocated the names on the wall and stared at Eliza's in awe. Reading her diary made me feel like I was getting to know her so the fact that she was the one who first discovered the room made me feel like I had a connection with her.
I turned away from the wall and scanned the other walls for more interesting stuff. Covering one wall entirely was newspaper clippings. One big clipping stood out and I reached over to pry it off the wall. Part of it crumpled beneath my fingers but I could still make out the headline- "Gold found near local academy. Authorities deciding what to do next."
I discarded the paper and looked at the others. They all seemed to say the same thing: gold was found.
A loose paper in the corner caught my eye and I picked it up. Its headline read- "Local academy closed down, April 3, 1905." Excitement bubbled in me as I realized that 1905 was the same year that Eliza attended the academy. Was this the same time the school closed down? Unfortunately, the bottom half of paper was just a smudge of black ink like it had gotten wet and the ink had run. I eagerly looked around, trying to find more information about the closing of the school.
"Sadie? Is that you?"
I clicked off my flashlight and swung around. In the light from the doorway, I could make out Rochelle's blonde hair and the outline of her face.
"Shut the door!" I hissed at her.
Rochelle crawled the rest of the way in and pulled the door shut behind her. I clicked on my flashlight and the room was once again illuminated.
"I was looking for you everywhere! Everybody left on a scavenger hunt and I couldn't find you so I stayed behind to look for you. Now I'm glad I stayed behind."
I groaned inwardly. I hadn't wanted anybody else to find the room. I know it was selfish, but I wanted this to just be my secret. Now that Rochelle found me, though, I decided to tell her everything. She sat quietly, her eyes wide, as I told her how I found the room and the diary.
"Wow," She breathed when I was finished, "That's so cool!" She looked around the room and found the names written on the wall.
"We should write our names on the wall and tell Tara and Josie about it too!" she said, her eyes shone in excitement.
My eyes widened in disbelief, "are you kidding? The more people that know about this, the more likely teachers will find out and then everybody will want look in here. Besides, I really want to find out what happened that made the school close down," I shot her warning look as we crawled out of the room, "So we can't let anybody else find out, okay?"
"It's a little too late for that."
It took me a minute to realize that the voice hadn't been Rochelle's. I climbed the rest of the way out and looked up to see Wiley grinning down at me.
***Uh oh! what's going to happen? guess you'll just have to wait and see :) and i'm going to say something, if you have any suggestions or request as to how this story should go, let me know! send me a message or comment on here and i might just put it in my story, you'll also get a shout out and i will try to read your stories as long as they're appropriate (: it will also be helpful to me because writer's block is not fun!
