Jessie’s POV
I was sitting in the hospital reading Gone With The Wind with Johnny, I was trying to be calm but all I could do was worry. And believe me I have a lot to worry about. Not only was everyone of my friends off fighting in a rumble right now, but I was also sitting in a hospital room reading to one of best friends, who was seriously injured in a fire. As I read I had to keep my eyes on the book because I knew if I looked at Johnny I would start to cry again and that was the last thing Johnny needed. But as hard as I tried, I couldn’t help myself, as soon the first tear broke from my eye they started to pour my face in steady silent streams. At first he didn’t notice I’m pretty sure he was asleep, but as I watched him lying in bed looking helpless I couldn’t help but let a sob slip out. At the notice of a sound that wasn’t my steady voice Johnny’s eyes opened and once they landed on me they widened and he tried to get up to come over and comfort me, but then he remembered he couldn’t.
“Jessie,” he whispered, “come here.”He gave me such a pleading look that I couldn’t say no to him, I walked over and knelt down next to his bed, I brushed his long black bangs out of his eyes. “I’m OK Johnny really,” I say smiling. “Jessie you know I have to leave soon don’t you,” he whispers. I wanted to shake my head and beg him to stay, but I knew he was right. I nodded my head and wrapped my arm around his shoulders, and rested my head on his. We mastered hugging while he’s been in the hospital. Now before you get any crazy ideas, me and Johnny are not dating, he is the best friend a girl could ask for, and now he’s leaving. “I’m going to miss you,” I said. “Me too sweetheart.” I hugged him a little bit tighter and then let go. I sat back and looked at him, he also had tears going down his face, I wiped them away and kissed his cheek.
Just as I sat back down the door opened and Dally walked in. As soon as his eyes landed on me his hardened expression softened. “Oh baby,” he whispered. Without saying anything else he walked over picked me up, and sat down in the chair across from Johnny’s bed. I curled into him like a child and tucked my head into the crook of his neck. He always does this when I’m sad and I always let him. He wrapped his strong arms around my small frame, as he felt my tears on his neck. “Shhhh, it's OK, shhhhh,” he whispered comfortingly. I began to relax into his hold, and pretty soon I fell asleep. Dally looked over at Johnny and he mouthed “take good care of her.” Suddenly Johnny’s heart monitor started to speed up and his breathing became very shallow. “God Johnny I have to go get a doctor man,” Dally yelled standing up and putting Jessie in the chair. “Dally wait, it's no use the doctor already came in,” Johnny said. “Just please wake Jessie up so I can say goodbye.” Dally’s face fell, he knew Johnny was right, he looked so tired and Dally could tell he was getting weaker. Dally nodded sadly and walked over and gently shook Jessie awake. “Jess baby wake up,” he whispered. She opened her bright blue eyes and sent me a small smile. “Hey sweetheart,” he says smiling back, “Johnny has to go now” My eyes well with tears but I quickly wipe them away not wanting Johnny to see me cry. I walked over and resumed my position next to his bed “Hey Johnnycake,” I whispered. “Hey sweetheart, I have to go now.” I nodded, not able to keep the tears in anymore. They rushed down my face in large streams. He reached up and wiped them away even though I knew he wasn’t supposed to move his arms. Dally came over and rested his hand on Johnny’s shoulder, “were all proud of you man,” he says. I nodded. Then something happened that I’m pretty sure only I’ve seen, a single tear slipped down Dally’s cheek. “We’ll miss you,” I whispered. “Jessie,” Johnny whispered “come here.” I leaned in so his lips were right next to my ear.
"You know what Jess,” he asked? “What,” I whispered back. “Your the best friend a guy could ask for, you made my life so much better, and I love you for that. Good luck with Dally, he’s a real piece of work.” I smiled through my tears and nodded. He took my hand, kissed it and whispered “You're a really great kid, stay gold for me ok?” “Ok,” I whispered back. He nodded, “good,” he whispered, then his pillow seemed to sink a little, there was a long beep and Johnny was gone. I looked over at Dally and saw that Dally looked angry. Without saying anything he stood up and punched the wall. Hard. “Bastards,” he yelled. Then without saying anything he sprinted out the door and down the hall. I knew I couldn’t be mad at him, Dally deals with sadness by being angry. So instead I sank to the floor, put my face in my knees and cried.
I don’t know how long I sat there but suddenly I heard a long beep. I looked up and saw Johnny’s hand twitch. “Johnny,” I said, hardly daring to believe it. His heart monitor returned to a steady beat. I stood up and walked over to his bedside. “Johnny,” I said again. His eyes fluttered open and settled on me. “Jessie,” he whispered. “Oh my God Johnny you're alive, I have to go get a doctor,” I say smiling at him, then I run out to find a doctor.
As soon as I spotted Johnny’s doctor I ran up to him and said “Doctor I was in Johnny Cade’s room and he flatlined, but then I guess his heart restarted again or something because he’s awake, can you please come check on him,” I rambled. A look of utter bewilderment crossed his face,” Yes, yes of course,” he says and ran back to Johnny’s room. Once we got there the doctor went over and looked at Johnny’s monitor. “Well I’ll be,” he muttered. “Well young man, this is nothing short of a mericle.” “If my calculations are correct, your condition has improved, I think you are going to be alright, you are very lucky, this only happens to about three percent of people.” “Really,” I say excitedly! I grinned at Johnny who was grinning back at me. I reached over and squeezed his hand. But then I remembered something that made a look of horror across my face. “Jessie what’s wrong,” Johnny asked? “Shit,” I whispered. “What,” he asked? “Dally,” I said, “ he doesn’t know.” Johnny understood immediately, he dropped my hand and said “ Go get him.” And with that I sprinted from the hospital room down the hall and out the door into the night.Hi Everyone:
