Jessie’s POV
I ran as fast as I could down the street. I was almost to my house when I ran into the rest of the gang. “Guys what’s going on,” I asked? “It’s Dally, he robbed a store the cops are after him,” Darry replied. “Damn it,” I yelled, and sprinted off down the street. “Jessie what’s going on,” Soda yelled after me. “I have to find Dally, I yelled back! I ran so fast that I don’t think even Ponyboy could keep up with me, and he’s a track star. I kept running until I was almost at the lot, then I saw Dally, he was in the lot about to take his heater out of his jacket pocket. But I knew two things that no one else did. One Johnny was still alive and was going to get better, and two that gun wasn’t loaded.
"NO IT’S NOT LOADED,” yelled! I ran faster if that's possible whimpering as I pushed my body to its limit. Every second counts, because I knew what Dally wanted, I had to stop him. The only thought running through my mind was “Get. To. Dally.” The cops jumped out of their cars, “drop it,” they yelled! I put in one last burst of speed, I rammed into Dally fisting the fabric of his brown leather jacket pulling him down. I felt my knee break my fall as I hit the ground, I curled into a ball as I heard three BANGS ring through the air!And then everything was silent. I opened my eyes to see the cops lowering their guns. I rolled over to look at Dally, he was lying on his stomach with his eyes closed muttering curses under his breath. I stood up only to fall back down again, I hit the ground hard whimpering in pain. I felt like I was going to pass out. I heard feet trampling and then I opened my eyes to see my brothers leaning over me. “Jessie princess are you all right,” Darry asked worriedly? I nodded and sat up, “I’m ok,” I said. I looked over to see Dally in the same position. “Dally,” I pleaded. “Damn it Jessie,” he yelled! “Why would you do that, you could have died! Do you know what I would have done with myself if something happened to you!” I stood up, ignoring the pain in my knee, tears streaming down my face, “so you would have been fine with leaving,” I yelled! “Leaving me,” I whispered brokenly. Dally’s face softened, he walked over and took my face in his hands, his brown eyes were full of tears. “No baby, no of course not I love you I just couldn’t take it anymore.”
“Dally,” I whispered, “Johnny’s alive.” His eyes widened and his hands left my face. “Jessie, don’t lie to me,” he said angrily. He ran his hands through his hair in frustration. “I’m not! I swear on the souls of my parents that I’m not. After you left I was crying then I heard beeping, Johnny woke up so I ran to get a doctor and he said that it was nothing short of a medical miracle, and that this only happens to three percent of people.” “So he’s ok,” he asked? I nodded. His face suddenly broke into a grin, and his lips were on mine. He lifted me up and spun me around. I laughed as he set me down. I winced as pain shot through my leg.
“What’s wrong, baby,” he asked?
“Nothing, I just cut my knee,” I replied. He looked down at my knee and saw the blood running down my leg. “Nothing! Jesus Christ Jessie, that's not nothing! Why didn’t you say anything?” I gave him a look. He looked down, a look of guilt crossing his face.
Suddenly I heard someone clear their throat. I spun around to see the rest of the gang looking totally confused. “Ok would someone mind telling me what the hell is going on,” Darry asked? “I’ll explain when we get home, and trust me I have a lot to say.” I started limping home but I didn’t get very far before Dal came up behind me, scooped me up and started walking home.
As soon as we stepped through the door Dally set me on the couch and went to the bathroom to get bandages. “Ok Jessie what’s going on,” Soda asked? “Ok so you might want to sit down.” They all sat down and Dal came back and started patching up my knee. “Ok so Johnny died.” Everyone's mouths hit the floor. “Wait I’m not done, he died but then his heart started again, the doctor said it was a medical miracle and that this only happens to three percent of people.” “Oh my God, we have to go see him,” Two bit yelled! They all headed for the door but I stopped them, “guys the doctor said Johnny needs to rest and we can see him in a few days.” “Ok I’m going to bed, I’m exhausted, good night guys.” I kissed Dally’s cheek and limped up the stairs.
After I changed into my pajamas and got into bed I finally let myself relax. But then thoughts started running through my head and all I could see was Dal with his gun drawn, and then all I could picture was him lying on the concrete dead. I couldn’t handle even the thought, I started balling for what must have been the hundredth time that night. I loved Dallas with all my heart and I don't think I could live without him. We’ve been dating for six months and I loved him so much. I rolled over on my side and let my tears fall, all the emotions from the day hitting me like a ton of bricks. The door opens and I wipe my face hurriedly.“Jess,” he whispers. Dally. I knew he would be up here sooner or later. “Jessie, baby what’s wrong?” “Nothing I’m fine,” I say, trying to keep my voice from shaking and failing miserably. “You are not fine, you're crying, and you never cry,” Dal says caringly, lying down next to me. This only made me cry more, I was shaking and heaving sobs racked my body. “Jess come on look at me please, Dally begged. I rolled over and looked at him. “Baby please talk to me. I’m not going to ask you whats wrong again cause I know thats a really stupid question, but please just say something.”
“How could you do that to me Dally, you were going to leave me here alone,” I whispered brokenly. He sighs and says “I never wanted to leave you, I just couldn’t take it anymore.” “Look I know how upset you were but what about me? You left me sitting on the floor of that hospital room balling my eyes out! All I wanted was for you to hug me and tell me everything was going to be ok! Meanwhile you were robbing a store and plotting your own end! How could you do that, I love you more than I’ve ever loved anyone or anything and you were going to leave me! I know you were heartbroken but you could have talked to me, we could have comforted each other we-,” before I could say anything else Dally pulled me into his chest muffling my sobs, my tears soaking his shirt. “Shhhhh it's ok shhhhhh,” he whispers.
“Listen to me ok, I never wanted to leave you. In fact you were the only reason I wanted to stay. This morning me and my dad got into it and he started hitting me and I started having flashbacks from when I was ten. It made me so angry that I punched him so hard I knocked him out. Then everything happened with Johnny and I thought he was dead and I just broke.” After he finished his story, I didn’t say anything I just wrapped my arms around him and snuggled deeper into his chest. “It's ok,” I whisper, “everyone breaks down at some point.” “Just promise me something.” “Anything.” “If you ever feel like this again just come talk to me.” He nodded. “Oh and don’t ever try to leave me again.” I promise,” he whispers, kissing my head. I look up at him and say “good.” Then I kiss him and it's the best kiss I’ve had in a long time. Once we break for air he wraps his arms around me and pulls me as close as possible. “Good night, “he says. “Good night,” I replied, tucking my head into the crook of his neck and kissing it lightly. I wasn’t looking at him but I could feel him smile. We stayed like that for the rest of the night.
