Y/n' s POV
I was lying in bed, I sighed, sitting up and ringing up my dad. It went to voicemail, as expected.
"Hey Dad, just wanted to say hey again. I was... promoted to lieutenant today. You would be... you would be proud." I cover my face with my hands, "and I got a new partner. He's... he's cool. I like him. I fed Sumo, and cleaned the house... again... today..."
I pause, taking a breath, "I hope you're proud. I know Mom would be. She was always proud.....bye....I love you." I press the end and the voice mails ends.
I awoke the next morning to get ready for work, and I had almost forgotten about Nines in my living room.
After I had showered, dressed and fed Buddy, I go to meet my partner at the elevator door. I nod to him as the elevator opens, and we head down to the main lobby, and into the parking lot.
"How about I drive this time." The android suggests, I hum sarcastically, "Over my dead body." I snap, as I put on my helmet and strap it in, I see a soft smirk crease into his expression, "That can be arranged." He says.
"You'll be dead before you can lay a hand on me." I tell him, with a scowl, Nines' expression goes blank again, as he gets onto the bike, "I was kidding Lieutenant."
"Yeah... me too." I say lightly.
Time Skip- At The Department
"If it weren't for that tall as fuck android behind you Y/n, I might actually have been able to overlook your ego today." Says Gavin, I snort, "How old are you Reed? Like, seven?" I hiss, and in a sarcastic tone behind me, Nines says, "Actually Lieutenant, he's seven and a half."
I smile, but only a little, making sure to hide it. Gavin's been having fun kicks out of roasting me any way he can every day. I didn't know that men take rejections from dates like this.
"Shut up coffee machine." Gavin spat, crossing his arms, "Ignore him." I tell Nines, "Most of everything he says is generated by the dying brain cells in his inflated brain." I chuckle at my own joke.
"Hey! No more time for play! There's been a homicide at CyberLife." Fowler shouts from his office, he points to me, Nines, Gavin and a rookie named Adam. "Get your asses up and get out there!"
I reach for my keys to the bike on my desk, but Nines snatches them up. I look at him with a glare, "I know where CyberLife is. You don't. I'm driving Lieutenant." He says firmly.
I sigh and grab my helmet as we go outside with Gavin and Adam, I catch Adam's eyes as we walk out.
Adam Ray was introduced to the department last week, and he's been kinda quiet, but I want to get to know him better, he seems nice.
I can see Nines watching Adam watch me, which was odd, he narrows his eyes at the new officer.
He gets onto the bike, "I dislike officer Ray, Lieutenant." Nines tells me, I get on the bike and wrap my arms around the android's chest, "Why?" I ask.
"He keeps staring at you." Nines answers. I raise a brow, "Why would you care?" I ask.
"I don't." Nines tells me, which I figure is a lie.
We drive to the CyberLife tower, and when we arrive, FBI vehicles are surrounding the area.
"Fuck..." I murmur as I get off the bike, "What the hell happened here?" I ask, Nines follows me off the bike.
"An android happened." Adam answers, walking up next to me, I feel the cold eyes of my android partner drilling into us.
"What do we know?" I ask, "Well, the-" Adam begins, "The fuck's the FBI doing here?" Gavin growls, interrupting Adam.
"They know who did it." Adam answers, "they just won't tell anyone."
"How come?" Nines asks, standing on the other side of me, "They might not want to worry anyone. Because whoever did this is gone." I walk up to the body of a male security guard, with no helmet on.
He has a clean shot to the head, blood in a pool around him on the ground. Nines squats down and dips two fingers in the wound, and licking them.
I furrow a lip in slight disgust, it oddly reminds me of Connor. I smile at the memory of Connor licking blood, and my dad getting upset over it.
"Riley Jones, age thirty four, security guard at CyberLife, a wife and three kids, cause of death...- bullet to the head, from a his own weapon. A hand pistol." Nines says, and stands back up.
"An android programmed to shoot did this. The shot... it's absolutely perfect." Nines says, I nod, "So..." I begin.
"I could narrow it down to later models." Nines says, "The hell are we even doing here anymore?! Why were we called?" I hear Gavin shout at the head of the FBI, Perkins.
"Excuse me. But no one called you puppy department minions." Perkins snapped, "Then who the hell did?" I question.
Perkins shrugs and walks away, Gavin makes his way over to us, "So... who called us?" Adam asks, "According to Perks over there- no one." Gavin says.
"We need to question Fowler then." I say, Nines agrees with a nod of his head, LED flashing blue. I punch his shoulder lightly, "I'm driving."
The android hands me my keys, "See you idiots back at the station." I wave bye to Adam and Gavin.
When we arrive back, we question Fowler, and he said he was positive it was an innocent man's voice that called after hearing gunshots at the tower, so... maybe he called us without knowing the FBI was already on it.
Fowler sends us home early that day, but before I leave, I end up being stopped and talked to by Adam.
Nines stood behind me, looming over us both like a shadow. Like a calculating presence behind us.
"Hey uhh... Y/n." Adam says, "Uhh... hi...?" I say, "What's up Adam?" I ask, he swallows hard and looks up at the android behind me. "Great job today." He blurts, I express a fake laugh, "We didn't do anything." I say.
I already knew this dude was just trying some sad attempt at making friends, and out of sympathy, I just say, "Thanks."
"See you tomorrow?" Adam says with a smile, I nod, "See you in the morning." I tell him, I walk around him.
Nines follows me and eyes the officer as we walk out, I shiver as we get outside, zipping up my jacket.
"Officer Ray is very odd Lieutenant." Nines says, I nod, "He just wants friends." I tell Nines as I get into the bike, I put on my helmet and fiddle with the strap.
Nines sighs out of frustration and shoves my hands away, trying the strap for me, "He has eyed you all day Lieutenant." Nines says after tightening the strap, I grunt as the leather creates a burning friction on my chin.
Now I start to worry, I wasn't interested in Adam that way, Nines sits behind me, wrapping his arms around my waist securely.
"I will be here if you need my assistance Lieutenant." Nines says. "Anytime."
