thought of the day: environmental training, the worst month for any recruit. having to march through a snowy landscape while you're hunted by beasts that can rip a chimaera apart. of course, the heat environment is considered even worse.
-kerkrader instructor on environmental training

location: Atlas wastes

pov Jaune

i was marching with most of my troops through the snowy expanse, this would form a part of their environmental training. i was in my new combat gear to look like the rest of my forces. i had to say i was disappointed both in the supposedly 'harch' weather and the Grimm. the weather was a minor annoyance and if the Grimm attacked they would be dead before they were called out. i hoped that this could compare to my training but Remnant had to spit in my face to tell me to quash my hopes. what was the threat here there is probably nothing that could compare to a  Limburg prime snowcat. at least i can reminisce in those old memories.

flashback

Rac: the crates are freezing.

I and my squad were trying to get some crates out of a river without falling in the ice water ourselves as i heard someone talk.

???: whats going on here whelps, your truck is slowing the rest down.

i turned around to see a large man wearing an instructors uniform he was 3 meters tall and heavily muscled on his back was a portable life support station that was connected to him he had a cane to help him walk but still, he didn't show weakness. this was instructor Orken ex Astarte of the Emperor's Eyes chapter. Alex was the first to react.

Alex: my lord we lost some supplies and are trying to retrieve them.

instructor Orken: are they of critical importance?

Alex: they are munitions, lord.

instructor Orken: let me put it this way can our troops reach the fortress-monastery without these supplies?

Alex: yes.

instructor Orken: then leave them, the only thing your doing now makes us sitting ducks.

we left the supplies and continued to march along with the cargo truck we were ordered to protect. and so it went.

one day we heard someone yell.

recruit: monster, 2 o'clock!

i looked to were the monster was to see a large cat-like beast jump towards a chimaera. when it landed on the chimaera it chewed on its turret only to rip it from the hull and then bitting down on the now defenceless gunner. we opened fire our guns didn't do much to it and the beast killed two more recruits. a recruit took a rocket launcher and fired the rocket didn't kill it but it ripped one of its back legs off. the beast let out a pained howl before two other rockets killed it. and so it went on for a month we continued to march not ones stopping to set up camp only marching till we reached the fortress-monastery. and were done with the cold environment training.

flashback end

it was night and i was in the tent i shared with the commissar. when he asked me somthing.

commissar Valentinian: do you think ironwood will agree to imperial rule?

Jaune: i don't know if not i want my troops to be ready for war against Atlas if necessary. so can i rely on you and your commissariat to weed out possible traitors?

commissar Valentinian: i will personally guarantee it. but there is another thing that's bugging me.

 Jaune: is it brother Umber?
