This Wattpad author wrote my new favorite teen fiction book Golden, so of course, I had to get an interview.
1. Which adjective describes you best? & Why?
I like to describe myself as multifaceted. I become intensely interested in just about anything if I can think about it in terms of a story. This holds true even for math and science. If I learn about a new discovery in particle physics, I tend to disappear down a rabbit hole for a little while trying to connect that new concept with our previous understandings of physics, and I'm also interested in the stories of the people who made the discovery. Additionally, I straddle the line between being a naturally anxious person and a bit of an adrenaline junky. I've been skydiving; I love roller coasters. I'm shy, but I love dancing at parties. I try to be very open-minded about what I might like to learn or do because I discover so much about myself and about the world that way
2. What music do you listen to?
Here's where I contradict myself because I make judgments too quickly about music. It's not intentional, but I have too-cool-for-mainstream syndrome. I tend to gravitate toward indie artists. I'll listen to indie folk, indie rock, indie pop, and indie hip hop. I also have a massive soft-spot for alternative rock. My friends like to joke that I'm a hipster when it comes to music and movies. I'm trying to branch out and listen to more mainstream stuff because, in general, a lot of music becomes popular because it's good, but I struggle to get past my snap judgments about popular music.
3. What types of books do you like to read?
I go through phases with books. My favorite genres are probably YA fiction and dystopian, but I've also really enjoyed nonfiction, horror, mystery, and fantasy at different points in my life. I like to read autobiographies written by comedians. I try to read the classics because they've influenced the way contemporary books are written. I like to say that I'll read anything you put in front of me, even if it's just the back of a cereal box.
4. What is your favorite quote or scene in your Wattpad book? (Or in your favorite Wattpad book?) & Why?
My favorite scene to write in Golden is when Faith goes to visit Zac's family. It's just sweet to write about a family sitting around a table together, talking. It's also this jumble of emotions for Faith, and it's an important moment for her in thinking about her own family more complexly. Trying to convey all of that in one scene was quite a challenge, and I changed it a lot before posting it. It's the type of scene that I would gladly rewrite when I have more experience under my belt because it contains these layers of emotions, but it is ultimately very positive.
5. What do you like best about Wattpad?
I love how two-sided the relationships between authors and readers can be. I like being able to express to people how much I enjoy their writing, and I like knowing what parts of my stories have made an impact on my readers.
