"So, Harry and you have been spending a lot of time together." Gemma smirks at me. I gulp down the red wine and turn to look at Harry who is giving Gemma a death glare.
Harry and Gemma have been going back and forth like every brother and sister. Gemma is very kind and sweet. She's not only beautiful but is very intelligent. She is currently pursuing a degree at the Sheffield Hallam University.
"Yes.... As friends." Harry says through gritted teeth which makes Gemma laugh.
"Yes, Harry. We both know what that means." Gemma winks and Harry just rolls his eyes.
"No, but on a serious note, we are just friends." I state, trying to make it clear to her... Or to myself.
"Dessert's here!" Anne walks into the dining room with a tray which has four cups and an ice cream tub.
"Oh, Anne, you really shouldn't have." I tell her as she places the tray on the table.
"This didn't even take ten minutes! Betty Crocker is a wizard." She says and we laugh.
Harry hands us each a cup and a spoon. I look down at the cup and see a microwaved brownie. It smells amazing. Gemma grabs the tub of ice cream which I'm guessing is vanilla. She takes three whole spoons and passes the tub along. Anne takes next, then Harry and then me.
"A classic all time favorite." I smile widely as I take in scoops. I don't really know how many I took. Meh, who cares.
"I know right. You can eat it anytime." Gemma adds in and I nod in agreement.
We all finish our dessert in silence. Anne stands up to pick up the dirty dishes.
"Let me Anne. You made dinner and dessert. Please let me clean up." I stand up and move to put my cup in the tray but Anne protests.
"My dear, you are our guest."
"An uninvited guest. Please let me." I smile and and collect all the cups, spoons and plates and keep it on the tray.
"I'm going to bed then. Had a really long day." Gemma yawns and then looks at me.
"Will you be here tomorrow?"
"No, I've got a shoot. So I'll be out of your house in the morning."
"Then you should have breakfast and leave." Anne interjects as she smiles.
"Oh, please Anne. You've already done so much."
"I'm not taking no for an answer." She says in a playfully stern way. I turn to Harry who just shrugs his shoulders.
"Fine, but only on one condition."
Anne nods her head for me to continue.
"I want to eat your famous waffle that Harry always talks about." I smile and Anne laughs.
"Deal. Waffle tomorrow." Anne and Gemma both stand up.
"Sure you don't want help?" Gemma asks.
"Nah, I can do it."
"Okay, we're off to bed. I'll see you both tomorrow" She says and leaves the dining room.
"Mum, go to sleep. I'll help Aditi." Harry says as he picks up the now empty dish of casserole.
Anne comes towards us from around the table and plants a kiss on Harry's forehead and then moves towards me. She looks at me with a warm smile and then plants a kiss on my forehead too. Suddenly, I feel sadness take over. Anne pulls away with a smile and then exits the room. She reminds me of the mother who was never there for me. The love of a mother is something I never had during my childhood. Yes, Salmaan's mom was a mother like figure. But it wasn't the same.
