Prologue

      Steven opened his eyes to bright lights. Confused, he sat up, scanning his surroundings. He suddenly felt a sharp pain at his side. He looked down and saw a bandaged wound on the side of his torso. He was scared, but to out of it to really think about it. Across the room, his gaze met the gems. The gems...he thought. Steven only had very faint memories of what happened the other night, but he remembered doing things... terrible things. It was like something straight out of a nightmare. He just figured it was his imagination playing games on him, making it seem so real. "GARNET! Steven's awake!" Amethyst called out. Garnet whipped her head around, her eyes piercing through Steven's soul. Her expression gave of the "We're-so-glad-you're-OK-but-we-are-in-pain" kind of look. "Steven.." Garnet quietly said walking up to the bed Steven was laying on, tears welling up in her eyes. Amethyst still at the back of the room. Her face was dark and grim, as if someone had just died. She wouldn't even meet Steven's confused gaze. "Are you... alright? Do you feel... stressed?" Garnet asked worriedly, placing a hand on Steven's belly. This wasn't like Garnet, she was always calm and collected. Something was wrong. 

     "I'm.. OK." Steven croaked, still regaining consciousness. "Where's Pearl?" he asked. "She's in the other room, she just wanted some time to herself.." Garnet replied. "What happened?" Steven questioned, his concern rising, causing his skin to glow a bright pink. Garnet flinched back, her hand trembling and her expression showing a sign of fear. Is she... afraid of me? Is Amethyst afraid of me?  Steven wondered. After a moment, Garnets face changed again, this time similar to the expression Amethyst was giving. Dark and sad, but angry at the same time. She glanced to the side, turning her head away from Steven. "Of course he doesn't remember, he was broken. No! He must have some memory of what happened. Ruby.. please. He wouldn't remember the damage he had done, he was out of his mind. BUT WHAT IF HE DOES?" Garnet argued with herself, trying not to let Steven hear. Is she coming undone? Oh no.. is this because of me? Steven panicked.  "GARNET! D-did I do something wrong?!" Steven cried. Garnet's face darkened even more. She couldn't take this anymore. Garnet unfused, revealing Ruby and Sapphire right in front of Steven. Sapphire would not meet his eye, while Ruby was sobbing uncontrollably. Her face displayed an angry sadness. She ripped off the blanket covering Steven's body, uncovering Steven's gem. 

     It was flipped to resemble Pink Diamond's.

     Steven felt some parts of those lost memories start to resurface, but not entirely. Steven began to hyperventilate in horror. I'm not her! I'm not her! This isn't real! This is all a bad dream! Wake up, wake up, wake up!! Steven's squeezed his eyes shut as his mind raced with new, yet still faint memories coming back to him. Ruby and Sapphire ran to the back of the room to join Amethyst, now looking more concerned at the situation. Ruby clung on to Sapphire, her face buried in her hair, while Sapphire held her tight in response. Steven put together some of the puzzle pieces he had. He was in a hospital. Something was very wrong. Suddenly, he snapped with emotion. "WHERE'S CONNIE?!" Steven exclaimed, tears running down his face. 

    "WHERE'S SPINEL?!"
