Sarah POV:
The next day, I had gotten permission to visit Lana. She was hooked to so many wires. She hadn't woken up yet and Ryder hadn't left her side and from the looks of it, he didn't sleep either. Seeing her in that state hurt worse than the fucking gun shot wound in my leg. Lana was my best friend. She was always there for me when I needed her.
Hell, if it weren't for her, I probably would have never left Adam and gotten with Kade. To be honest, she was the reason for my happiness. Kade just added to it.
Dad had spent most of the night begging for Lana's forgiveness. I'd never seen my dad break down the way he did. I just wished she were awake to hear his apology.
Kade stood behind me with his hands on my shoulders, rubbing them gently.
"Is she gonna be okay?" I asked as I looked at her. "Doc said she should be. Her body needs the rest." Ryder replied.
I touched Lana's hand, hoping she would know I was there with her.
"Ryder, you should go get some rest. We'll call you if anything happens." Dad told him. "No, I'm fine." He replied. "At least go take a shower or something. It will help." Dad said. Ryder sighed and finally gave in. "I'll be back soon." He said and left the room.
We all sat for a while and tried to hold a conversation but we couldn't concentrate on it.
I took Lana's hand, hoping she knew I was there.
"Why the hell does everyone keep touching me?" I heard Lana mumble.
"Sissy!" I squealed in excitement. "Bitch, I'm hurt, not deaf." She hissed at me.
"Hey, darlin'. How do you feel?" Dad asked and took Lana's hand.
"I've been better, but I can manage." She replied and looked around the room.
"He'll be back soon. Dad made him go home and get some rest." I told her, knowing she was looking for Ryder.
Ryder walked through the door about an hour later and when he saw Lana, his eyes lit up.
"You're awake!" He said, happily and kissed her.
"How do you feel, baby?" Ryder asked her. "I'm okay. They have me on some pain killers." Lana told him.
"Uh.. What's going on?" Dad asked, confused.
Cat's out of the bag now, I guess. Time for all of us to come clean.
"Lana and I have been seeing each other for the past couple of weeks, boss. I'm sorry we didn't tell you." Ryder said, guilt in his voice.
"Why didn't you?" Dad asked. "We were afraid you wouldn't approve." Lana replied. "Approve?" He asked and laughed.
That was something I didn't expect.
"You kids don't know me very well do you? I'd rather it be Ryder, someone I know I can trust with your life, than someone else." He told Lana.
"Wait... For real?" I asked. "Well hell, I guess there is no reason for us to keep our secret then." Kade said. "You two? Good God, I must be a blind old man." Dad laughed.
He looked at Kade then Ryder.
"You two take care of my girls. I am disappointed, however , that you didn't tell me sooner." He continued.
"Sorry, boss." Kade and Ryder said.
"When do we get to go home?" Lana asked. "I'm being released tomorrow. The doctor hasn't said when you will yet.
"Dad... I need to ask you something." Lana told dad. "Okay." He replied. "Who was Veronica Harrison?" She asked.
Why does that name sound so familiar to me?
Dad looked at Lana for a moment before speaking.
"How do you know about her?" He asked. "She was Adam's mother. Dad what happened? He said you killed her." Lana said. "What?" I asked.
Adam never talked about his mother much. He only told me that she left when he was a kid. He said she was having an affair and then she was just gone. I assumed she had run off with whoever she had the affair with.
"No. No it wasn't like that. It was my fault though." Dad said before sighing heavily.
"What happened, Samuel?" Kade asked him.
"Veronica was my friend. We grew up together. Her husband was a jealous bastard and beat the shit out of her all the time. She came to me for help." He said, sadly.
He really must have cared about this woman.
"He found out that we had been in contact and automatically thought we were having an affair. He beat her to death." He finished, close to tears.
Mother of God. That's why Adam did all of this?
"Jesus Christ." Ryder mumbled. "Dad... Fuck, I'm sorry." Lana said. "She was a sister to me. She and your mother were nearly inseparable." Dad told her.
Just as dad finished his story, the doctor walked in.
"Hello, Ms. Reyes. How do you feel?" He asked. "Better." Lana replied. "Good. You're lucky to be alive Ms. Reyes. It's a miracle to be honest." He told her. "I have a lot to fight for, Doc." Lana replied.
I smiled softly at my sister. It's true. She was a hell of a fucking fighter.
"I can see that." Doc replied.
"Any word when she can come home, doc?" Dad asked. "With as well as she's doing now, two days tops." He replied.
"Thank you, doc. Really." Ryder said as he shook the doctor's hand. "Your wife is a strong woman." He said.
Seriously? Even the doctor saw it? Dad really was fucking blind. The thought made me laugh lightly to myself.
"Oh.. She's not my wife." Ryder said, nervously.
I looked at dad when the doctor left the room.
"And you didn't see it?" I asked. "Shut up." He mumbled.
