Fourteen Year Old Melanie

"Today was fun, Joey," I said, slowly creeping around my house.

"I had fun too, but I don't understand why we need to sneak around," he responded.

"I Uh... I'll explain later," I lied.

When we finally got to a safe hiding spot, I looked him in the eyes.

"Sorry 'bout that," I said.

"It's cool. Wanna go out some other time?" He asked.

I looked at the house and then back at him. "I would love that," I said.

He leaned in for a kiss and I leaned too. As soon as our lips touched, my dad came out of nowhere. He pulled me up to stand and grabbed Joey by his collar.

"Dad, stop!" I screamed.

"Never come back!" Dad screamed in Joey's face as he dropped him to the floor. Joey got up and took off running. As I saw my first kiss run away from me, my dad grabbed my arm harshly and pulled me inside. He tossed me onto the kitchen floor and I fell on my arm hard. Realizing that I didn't want to be kicked, I got up and faced him.

"What the fuck is wrong with you? Do you realize what could've happened?!" He screamed.

"Joey was different! He'd never run away from me!" I said, tears bursting out of my eyes.

"I would've thought that in your fourteen years of life, you'd realize what you are. A fuckin' freak!" He yelled.

"JOEY WOULDN'T HAVE RAN!" I screamed.

He grabbed my face with one hand and squeezed real hard. Some of my makeup came off in his hand. "If I was a fourteen year old boy, and I saw a freak like you, I'd run further than the eye can see, baby," he whispered, slowly letting go of my face.

"Dad? What's going on?" My ten year old brother said, coming down the stairs.

"Nothing, Peter. Go upstairs," he demanded.

"All you have is a single mask hiding your true self from the world. If I was you, I wouldn't be swapping spit with all of the boys in our fucking neighborhood," he said.

"FUCK YOU!" I screamed, spitting in his face. I felt a hard hand swipe across my face. I fell to the ground and grabbed my face in shock.

"Don't you ever talk to me like that again," he said.

"You don't fucking get it, do you? I didn't choose to look like this, daddy. Man, I wish I could've chose everything. I would have never picked you to be my daddy," I said.

The next thing I knew, I was locked in my room with a big bruise under my left eye. I knew I had to leave, and I needed to leave quick. I've put up with his bullshit for so long, and I already packed a bag for this special occasion. I packed all of my makeup and even took my piggy bank with me, which has about a $100 from when I used to get money from relatives. Then, I climbed out the window and got the fuck outta there. I looked up at the house one last time, to see my brother standing at the window, looking at me.

He waved at me. I waved back and my eyes started watering. Could I really leave him with that monster? I thought for a moment. Daddy only hated me, right? All these thoughts left my head when I heard a voice.

"YOU GET BACK HERE!" My dad screamed. I screamed in return and took off running. At first, he chased me down the street. Then he stopped halfway and called out.

"GOOD! NOW I DON'T HAVE TO DEAL WITH THE FREAK! AND DON'T YOU EVER THINK OF COMIN' BACK!" He screamed. Tears poured from my eyes as I ran. I didn't stop for ten minutes.

I walked to a nearby gas station to get water. When I walked inside, I grabbed a water bottle and put it on the counter to check out.

"What are you doing out by yourself?" The cashier asked.

"I'm... Runnin' away I guess," I responded.

She smirked. "Been there. Don't travel at night," she said, handing me some change. I nodded and turned around to walk out.

As I was doing so, I noticed a sign in the back. I walked to it and saw an ad for some kind of circus. Without her looking, I tore it from the wall and walked out of the store. I retired for the night in a cold, abandoned warehouse.

In the morning, I set out for the circus. Many people tried the offering me a ride, but I kept declining.

I kept walking until I got to a circus- looking tent. A Freak Show. For people like me. I squealed and started speed walking.

When I finally got there, I saw bright carnival lights and a Ferris wheel. When I got closer, I noticed a carousel as well. I smiled and kept walking. As I was walking to the entrance, I heard someone call out to me.
