"What?" I asked and he jumped up. "I don't know how it's possible, but my wolf told me you're my mate, he's sure of it," he said, not being able to stand still for a millisecond. I grinned," most people who hear voices in their heads would be put in a psych ward." He stood still," most humans on werewolf territory would be put in our psych ward." I rolled my eyes and stood up. "But how are you so sure?" I asked and he raised his eyebrows slightly. "I just... am, when you're in close vicinity of your mate, your wolf soul makes an unbreakable connection with them; it had thrown me so off guard I kind of almost ran you over," he said and he quieted his voice towards the end. I chuckled," but how can your wolf thing make contact, as I don't have one?" He moved his hand to the back of his neck," that's the thing, I don't know, but I'll figure it out," he said enthusiastically. Then I heard a bing come from my back pocket.
Anna had texted. I showed my screen to Max. "Jane, no one can know about this, literally no one. This is a secret that has been carried on for centuries and only a few humans have known about this," He said and I nodded. "Tell her we're on the Champs, we'll ride to one of the bystreets and we'll meet them there. I'll ask Finn if he can pick them up from the hotel," he said and I typed the necessary out. "Are they also... werewolves?" I carefully asked and he nodded. I sent the message and suddenly got the realization. "Wait, you got your own car?" He grinned and nodded," of course, yet again, we're the biggest pack of Europe." I sighed, "so that's why you can pay for literally everything." He nodded with the same smiling expression. "And that's why you give up such big Bourgouise vibes," I joked and he tried to look mad at me, but failed miserably. "Well, I haven't heard you complain once," he responded while putting an arm around me and leading me back up the path.
While walking back he explained a lot. Since I'd gotten this new information, my perspective had changed immensely, just like his mood. Not in a bad way at all, he couldn't stop talking, and I couldn't stop listening. "So you're telling me a werewolf can hear people's heartbeats?" I repeated after him confused and he nodded while resting his hands on the steering wheel.
"That's bullshit," I mumbled and leaned with my arm against the window. "Trust me, it's the best way to catch people in a lie." I looked at him with raised eyebrows:" how in the world can a heartbeat translate to whether or not you're lying?" He carefully stopped for a red light and looked at me," when you're lying, your heart will most of the time start to beat faster, or even beat out of rythm for just a second." "How many times have you listened to mine then?" I ask grinning and he shook his head a little while smiling," you don't want to know."The light changed to green and he sped up once again. To my surprise, he didn't own some kind of fancy wagon that sounded like your grandma snoring every time he started driving. Just like they can't stand out in their behavior, he couldn't own something 'supernatural'. That's why he drove around with a Fiat 500.
"Since you're telling me everything," I started while small rain droplets started sliding down the windshield," do you also have an explanation for those dudes at breakfast?" I saw his fist clench slightly on the steering wheel, but then he relaxed with his head against the headrest. He pulled into the parking strip beside the road and turned the keys, quickly replacing the sound of the motor with the ever-worsening rainfall now crashing down on us. "I don't know if I want you to know that," he said and I swallowed. "I can handle it, I literally just learned that you can shift into a fluffball every full moon and I'm still in the same car as you," I said and he grinned for a second before letting his face fall neutrally. "It all has to do with yesterday," he started and turned in his seat so he was partially turned towards me. "Within the werewolf kind, the leaders of packs and their family are seen as famous, especially those with big packs. It's not only that they like to rumor about them, but constantly feel the need to know more about their private lives; and since most packs don't normally talk or communicate to each other, most news is still spread through newspapers," he explained and I raised my eyebrows. "It's 2017," I said and grinned. "Well, since werewolves can live rather long and there are more old wolves than those of my age, news exchange hasn't aged a lot," he said and I shook my head smiling. "But to fill those newspapers, they need news, which is usually brought in by paparazzi chasing down a family of or the actual leader. Normally I'm not a big target, since I don't attend the Champs-Élysées nearly as much as I'm doing right now, except for with a skateboard. But since I'm pretty much our and about every day since we met,-" he explained and trailed off his gaze toward the water gliding over the glass.
"Yesterday, while we were on that terrace of that café," he started and let his hand travel through his hair," and a paparazzo saw us." I swallowed, yet couldn't fathom speaking another word. "When a werewolf finds his soulmate, especially a leader, it's big news. And since our pack is well known because of its size, it's... world news, especially since the rumor of you being human is spreading with it together." I sighed," I'm so sorry, I didn't know I'd caused you so much trouble." An extreme amount of guilt flushed over me, I could've never expected this from a dumb school trip. First I caused him to hit us, and now I actually ruined his image, I couldn't understand myself anymore. Yet Max quickly stopped my thought train. "Jane," he said and got a hold of my shoulders," you have not caused me any trouble. I couldn't care less if the entire universe knew we were meant for each other. You're my mate, which means more than you as a human could fathom right now. It may just be a word for you, but it's something every single werewolf waits for every day of their life." I felt tears burning within my eyes," you've only known me for three days or do, what if I'm not what you're meant to have; since I'm not one of your kind?" I saw my pain reflect in his eyes, whereafter he pulled me closer, hugging me and giving me a feeling I'd never forget. It was that same sensation he'd given me before, yet it was traveling throughout my entire body; I felt his warmth become a part of me.
Het let go softly, only far enough so I could look into his eyes. "Three days is enough to know you're meant for me, Jane, and I know that you can feel it too," what he said would've been weird if it wasn't true. It was reality, these three days had felt more like 3 years of knowing him. It was an extraterrestrial feeling, but one I didn't want to ignore for all the money in the world. This was the first time the thought crossed my mind, one I believed with certainty,
I truly felt feelings for him.
