My words seemed to have pushed him further since he slowly changed his seating position and placed his hands onto the table. Yet his concern kept growing on me, we felt isolated from the rest of the world. A thousand things were hurtling through his head, but none stayed long enough to hoist over his lips.
As if an unknown power from my subconsciousness rose up, I put my hand on his. The feeling from yesterday and far before arose once again, said feeling that will never make me let go. I drove my eyes away from the contact and looked up at his eyes, which were still staring at our connection. Yet again, whatever I felt, he picked up on it too. Everything around us seemed to turn into a haze as if only our table and seating were standing on this planet.
While I tried to stir away from all the cliché quotes flying through my head, I caught his gaze on me. He sighed deeply but still couldn't manage to speak what he desired. "Could you maybe say it in your own language?" I suggested softly in hopes of giving him some of his comforts back.
He took a deep breath, his eyes focused on the wooden surface of the table, before looking up and speaking," Nous sommes accouples." He stared at me, waiting in a sort of expectation, yet that seemed to be too big of a word for it. He kept his emotions in, where they were probably going through him like a tornado. I raised my eyebrows slightly," I don't understand any of it." Half of him gave the impression of disappointment, but on the other hand glad I didn't know what he just said.
He turned his wrist underneath my hand, making my fingertips rest in his palm. "Are you sure you actually want to?" he asked calmly as if it was rhetorical. "Of course," I answered with confidence, whereafter I lost our eye contact once again. He softly rubbed my fingers with his thumb, strengthening the electric feeling more and more. "I want to understand," I added softly after a moment of silence, which followed up these words too. Just two minutes of doing nothing, sitting in our own thoughts, as if we'd planned it together.
Said silence was broken when the entrance to the cafe was opened rather brutally, which made us both turn. A man of 20 with a couple of accomplices barged in, dressed in rather ordinary clothes. The man's eyes fell on Max, which made him grin slowly. Max focused his gaze upon them, especially the front runner. He gave off a similar dominant feeling like Max's, but nowhere near as strong.
"Jane, stand up," he said rather fast as if we were in a hurry. I stoop up carefully and almost directly pulled close by his arm around my shoulders. The trio at the door started making way to us, ultimately trapping us at the wall closest to the exit.
"Monsieur a finalement trouvé son Accouple,"
The male said mockingly while Max pulled me in closer, rather protectively. The odd feeling started spreading to everywhere it could crawl, the closer I got to him. I slid in between my shoulder blades and inkled in my arms, it wouldn't stop. Yet I didn't have it in my power to push away, or I didn't want to at least."Pas votre entreprise," Max snarled back, clearly not being a fan of this folk. His voice was low and formal, a tone he hadn't used around me. The guy grinned, clearly not phased by Max's words.
"Allez Max, Tu ne vas pas me presenter?" He said, turning his full attention to me. He reeked of a non-desirable male deodorant. I didn't like him, maybe because of how Max behaved towards him. Even though I didn't understand a word of what was said, it was clear to me this male was bad news.
"Non," Max responded in the driest tone I'd ever heard. He simply pushed himself past them, still holding onto me the same way he did before, not wasting another word on the gang.
Once we got outside once again and he'd closed the door behind him, he sighed. "I'm so sorry for that," he said and I shook my head. "It's okay," I answered and he looked at me silently for a few seconds. He let go of me and let his hands travel across his face, clearly in distress. "I think we better leave before those assholes decide they need some air," he mumbled, got a hold of me again, and seemed to scan around us protectively. "Where to, then?" I asked, not wanting to question him too much. He looked at me wearily and closed his eyes," to what I need to explain."
In silence, we left, far from the cafe. We walked through small and dark alleys, which didn't comfort me all too well. As if he'd read my mind, he held me tighter when passing through said allys, which definitely made a difference. In stillness, we found ourselves in a small, clean street. You didn't have to check your surroundings for too long to realize you were in France, this exterior just roared of Provence. The softly tinted walls, the active growing ivy, and the painted blue doors.
"Are we close?" I asked wearily, I wasn't used to stepping more than a 100 a day. He grinned and tapped his fingertips against my shoulders. "We're almost there," he answered gently and let go of me. He looked around rather secretively as if checking if anyone was spying on us. With one hand he pushed aside a vine of ivy to reveal a blue door. "Seriously? You have a secret door and you paint it baby blue," I mumbled and I heard Max try to contain a laugh. "Just follow me," he responded, pulling down the door handle. He didn't get to chance to push the door open, since someone on the other side had done that for him; aggressively. Splinters fell out of the wood while it banged against an adjacent wall. 3 men of mixed ages stood in the doorway, a defiant glaze over their eyes. I swallowed, this didn't seem to be part of Max's plan. "Bonjour Jane," one of the men said, whereafter I tried to make eye contact with Max. The only thing I received was a guilty look as if he knew what was about to go down was bad.
