During the past few years, Mordecai had taken up the hobby of stargazing. At first, Alistair and Elaine were concerned due to the fact that, besides when they were together, Mordecai spent most hours of the day on his own, hardly talking to anyone; though when he invited them to a little outing it made them relax. Normally it was up and downs between sensitive and nervous Mordecai, and the competent and smart one that took things seriously. He sometimes changed with each passing season but now something was definitely different.
As night fell, the blue haze of day lifted to reveal the stars. Mordecai always felt that this was closer to the truth of who we are. He wondered if we were nocturnal, would we feel more connected to those far away stars, perhaps sensing the fragility of Earth all the more. To him, the night was when the curtain was pulled back when we got to see out of the window we call "the sky" to the universe beyond. And thus, under the light of the stars, the time had come, to tell the truth.
The trio's knees touched as they sat on the rooftop of the small bakery under the stars. Mordecai shifted, removed his elbows from his knees, sat a little straighter. "Brother, Elaine, there's something I've been meaning to tell you."
The couple looked at him with curiosity. "Is everything alright, brother?" Al laid his hand lightly on his younger brother's shoulder.
Mordecai shook it off, earning a concerned frown from Elaine. He stood up, breathing uneven and shallow, and stepped closer to the ledge of the roof. He felt the cold, evening air around him, how it flowed, changed direction in an instant, but as always, it worked silently. Without warning, he leaped off the edge of the roof, Elaine's scream filled the silence.
Alistar darted to the edge of the roof, his heart in his mouth. But before he could reach his brother, a gust of wind blew in his face and swirled around him. It lifted him up and set him gently on the roof once again.
Eliane gasped and Al was just as astounded, for just a moment his balance wavered.
Mordecai appeared on the edge of the roof once again, hovering with gentle motions, and extended his hand to Elaine "Come!" he urged. As if in a trance, Elaine let herself be led to the edge. She stopped abruptly when she realized she stood balanced on the gutter, as her friend had done not long before.
"It's too high," she protested. She glanced down; if she fell from such a height, she could be badly injured, if not killed.
"Come," Mordecai urged again, tugging at her hand. Slowly, Elaine released her tight grip on the roof tiles. One foot left the gutter, and then the other; she gasped as she felt herself falling, but Mordecai held her fast and she was lifted through the air. His arm wrapped around her waist, and she could hear the sound of Alistair laughing below.
"You're not gonna fall," Mordecai promised. "Come on, let's fly!"
Yes, Elaine said or meant to say. She was not sure whether she spoke aloud, but then they were spiraling upward through the breezes and the night air in a rush of motion. She found herself laughing in breathless delight, how did Mordecai keep this treasure a secret for all these years?
