Tris POV:
Christina and I are at dinner now. I really don't want to see Four. He's my instructor and I can't think of him as anything more because it's going to lead to awkwardness or get in the way of my training and I can't afford to not make it into Dauntless.
Christina and Will are arguing over who know's what this time I don't know where Al is, but my thoughts are to scattered to get into it. Then I realize I haven't seen him at all today. I wonder if his parents came to see him it is visiting day after all.
I stop thinking and listen to what Christina and Will are talking about. There talking about the Aptitude test. That's something I can't talk about because I can't lie Christina will see with her Candor trained eyes. "Tris did you kill the dog" That snaps me out of my trance. Her and Will were talking about how they wouldn't want a dog because of the test. They talked about how they killed it and got Dauntless. "No," I say. "Then how did you get Dauntless?" Will asks me. "I didn't" I got Abnegation." It is half true. Tori reported my result as Abnegation. "But you chose Dauntless anyway? Why?" "I told you it was because of the food." I say smirking. The Christina launches into the story of the first day.
When we go back to the dormitory the rankings are up and Four is in there so I just stare at me feet to avoid looking at him. I feel his eyes on me though. Why is he looking at me I look up for just a second and we make eye contact and I look back down. I don't want to see his blue eyes.
He explains the rankings to us. "For those of you who just came in I am explaining how the ranks were determined . After the first round of fights, we ranked you according to your skill level. The number of points depends on your skill level and the skill level and the skill level of the person you beat. You earn more points for improving and more points of beating someone of a high skill level. I don't reward preying on the weak. That is cowardice." His eyes are on Peter. "If you have a High rank you lose points for losing to a low ranked opponent." Molly lets out a snort or grumble I can't tell.
"Stage 2 of training will be weighted more heavily than stage one because it is more closely tied with overcoming cowardice. That said, it is extremely difficult to rank high at the end of initiation if you rank low is stage one." Four says. I want to look at him and when I do his eyes are on me again.
"We will announce the cuts tomorrow. The fact that you are transfers and the Dauntless-born initiates are not will not be taken into consideration. Four of you could be Factionless and none of them. Or four of them could be Factionless and none of you or any combination thereof. That said here are your ranks."
He hangs the board and steps back so we can see the ranks.
1. Edward 2. Peter 3. Will 4. Christina 5. Molly 6. Tris 7. Drew 8. Al 9. Myra
Al isn't last. I look at Christina and she's frowning at the board and she isn't the only one. "What?!" Molly demands pointing at Christina. "I beat her in minutes and she's ranked above me?" "Yeah," Christina asks Molly smiling with her arms crossed. "And?" "If you intend to secure yourself a high rank, I suggest you don't make a habit of losing to low ranked opponents," says Four. He pockets the chalk and walks by me without looking in my direction. His words sting a little reminding me that I'm the low ranked opponent. Apparently it reminds Molly too. "You" she says."You are going to pay for this!" I expect her to lunge at me, but she just turns her heal and stalks off. If she exploded then her anger would have been gone after a few punches.
Peter has been quiet after the ranking went up. There's no way he is satisfied with second place. Will and Christina high-five and then Will claps me on the back and says "Look at you number six." "It still might not be good enough" I say. Al just wanted to go to bed he wasn't happy about his rank.
That night I have trouble falling asleep because I'm thinking about my family. Then I hear a scuffle in the dormitory. The squeak of a shoe and then a thud. Then there are screams. I try and locate the source of the screams. Someone turns on the lights. Edward is on the floor, surrounding his head is blood and his hand covers his eye and through his finger I see the handle of a butter knife that I recognize from the dinning hall.
I crouch by Edward and say "Lie still" Edward thrashes again and I say louder "I said, Lie still" "My eye" he screams. "Take it out, Get it out, get it out of me, get it out". I shake my head and realize he cannot see me and I say "No you have to let the doctor take it out. Hear me? Let the doctor take it out and breath." "It hurts" he sobs. "I know it does," Instead of my voice I hear my mother's voice. "It will be alright," I say to him. I step back when the nurse arrives and there are to faces missing Drew and Peter.
After they take Peter I decide to clean up the blood. I doubt I will be able to sleep again. I change clothes and Christina stands watching me clean throwing away the dirty paper towels and getting me new ones. Eventually she says "You know who did this right?" "Yeah" "Should we tell someone?" she asks. "You really think the dauntless will do something after they hung you over the chasm? After they made us beat each other unconscious?" She doesn't say anything.
I keep cleaning the blood and no one sleeps well that night...
