Mia
~~~
After having a mini mental breakdown, I realised I couldn't just stay here. I wasn't going back in the direction of the club, that was for sure.
I stood up, dusting myself off and taking a deep breath. I walked along the road I was currently on, it was a dark long road with no houses, it was flanked on both sides by trees, adding to the creepiness. I imagined someone lurking in them and shivered, I was never going to sleep again after this.
I quickened my pace a little, wanting to be out of here as soon as possible. Maybe I'd stop the next car that drove down and beg them for a ride, if any cars even came along here. I thought about what my Mom would say right now about me considering getting into some strangers car. It's not like I had any better options.
I walked down the side of the road waiting for headlights to appear but the road seemed fairly empty. It was dark, and there were no streetlights, only the dim glow of the moon above. I could barely see in front of me but I felt as if I could make out the shape of a house coming up ahead. I got closer and realised it was in fact a house.
This situation was literally what my nightmares were made of. Knocking on a random house on an empty road in the middle of the night. What if the person who lived here was some serial killer or axe murderer?
Mia, you just ran away from a massacre at a mafia strip club. I silently agreed with myself, this was going to be a walk in the park compared to that.
Okay, I could do this. I lifted a shaky hand and knocked on the front door, nobody answered and I clicked the doorbell, praying that someone actually lived here. I saw a light switch on inside through the glass of the door and felt fear rising in my stomach. Please be nice, please be nice, please be nice.
The door opened to a lady who I'd clearly just woken up, I wasn't sure what time it was but if I were to guess I'd say around midnight. She stood in the door way looking rather unimpressed in her polka dot pyjamas.
"Can I help you?" She asked. Gosh I'd been crying and I probably looked like a serial killer myself right now. Maybe it was her that should be scared.
"Hi, um, I was out with some friends and I somehow ended up lost, do you mind if I use your phone?"
The lady looked me up and down for a minute as if she was either evaluating my story or just judging me.
"Yeah, but try and make it quick." She closed the door on me before returning with her phone in her hand. She stood super close to me as if she thought I was suddenly going to run off with it.
I held her phone in my shaky hands and had a mini panic about who I should call. I decided on a cab, I'd get them to drive me home, I so badly wanted to see my Mom right now and act like life was normal. I dialled a cab and the lady took her phone back.
"Thank you so much." I thanked her, trying to let her know that I wasn't a crazy person and she seemed to soften a little.
"You can wait inside if you want sugarplum."
I took note of her southern accent, she seemed pretty trustworthy, her polka dot pyjamas helped her look friendlier. How could things go even more wrong right now? I nodded and she let me in, sitting me down in her small living room.
"Mommy." I heard a child call from up her staircase.
"One minute, honey, Mommy's busy."
I suddenly felt so bad for interrupting the poor woman's night like this but I was desperate. I was literally stranded in the middle of nowhere.
"You want a hot drink, sweet pea, you must be frozen." I shook my head and thanked her. I was too distracted right now to be worrying about a hot drink. My insides were also churning and I felt nauseous at the though of what I'd just witnessed.
As I counted down the seconds to my cab arriving my mind sent me sick images of the bodies I'd seen on the ground, I kept picturing Dante among them and I fought to hold back the tears. A car honked outside and I stood up, thanking the lady once again. She smiled and told me to get home safe.
I'd told the cab driver my address and asked him how far it was, he's said around an hour, I hadn't even known how far I was from my home until this moment. I tried to hold myself together mentally in the back of the cab but it was nearly impossible.
I took in a shaky deep breath, I was finally going to see my Mom.
We arrived outside my house and I paid the driver. Luckily I'd stuffed some cash I'd swiped from Nico a few days ago in my bra for safe keeping. Who knows what I'd have done without it. I climbed out of the cab and almost collapsed on my driveway, I was so relieved to be home right now.
The tears threatened to spill again and I held them back, I'd just tried to make myself look less crazy and more presentable in the back of the cab. I didn't want my Mom to worry too much. I walked over to the door and knocked. After a few seconds the door opened.
"MIA? Oh my goodness I wasn't expecting you back so soon."
I was so relieved to see her that her words didn't register until after I'd hugged her for like a minute straight.
"Oh my goodness, I missed you so much Mom."
"Oh I missed you too sweetheart. How was Bali?"
Wait. How was what?
