Backstory: Josephine was not born in Australia, but in America. At first she was raised by only Charlie as Brandon was deployed to Afghanistan at the time, he didn't even get to meet his daughter until a year later and by then Josephine was starting to walk. When Josephine was around three she was given glasses because of being nearsighted. That is also when she began to show signs of being a mermaid. She loved the water and spent her days at the beach with her dad. When Josephine turned four those days at the beach turned into nightly swim lessons with dad. She thought nothing weird of her dad when he had a tail, the only condition was that it was their little secret and nobody was to know. Three years later when Josephine was seven her dad was deployed again, except this time for two years. Charlie was left to care for her daughter, this period in her life gave Josephine the love of reading and learning. However, by the time Josephine turned ten her world was turned on its ear. Suddenly Brandon was stationed in Australia and Josephine had to leave all she was familiar with behind. At first her parents tried to make the move easy for little Josephine who was just now discovering her powers much to her parents' distress as their daughter sometimes wandered off and would be found talking to sea turtles or sometimes even sharks. Josephine was getting much better at swimming and had her first tail appearance, the only problem being that she could not wear her glasses in the water and could not rely on her vision to swim. Her father, having had his tail for most of his life knew that his daughter needed something to keep her from popping a tail every time she touched water. So, he did something that he claimed his grandparents taught him. He bought a necklace for his daughter, a simple gold colored necklace and put it in a clam that had a pearl in it. Most of the time the clam was kept inside within a box that was never to be opened by anybody other then him. The only time the clam was ever brought out was when there was a full moon, then Brandon would take the clam outside and open it to allow the moonlight to shine on it. After six months he took the necklace out of the clam and added the pearl to it, since then in order to pop a tail Josephine must take the necklace off. By the time she was thirteen Josephine's mother got a job as a computer technician which left Josephine home for hours, alone. She began to get her first real sense of freedom and often chose these times to go swimming, despite the risks because of her limited sight. This is also when she got her scar, she was in an underwater cave when it began to collapse and Josephine couldn't find her way out, she was cut by a rock and was knocked out. By the time she came to it was daytime, forcing Josephine to stay in the water until nightfall. When she got home she was promptly scolded by her mother and grounded. This started her rebellious streak and when she began to take her life into her own hands. This led to a life of secrecy, sneaking out to walk along the beaches and swim at night without her parents' knowledge.
