Background: Derek and his family moved to Germany when he was young after his father was offered a position as a regional director for his company in Germany. Growing up as an immigrant with an American accent on his pronunciation got his made fun of be the other kids, in response he studied longer and started taking judo classes. The sense to constantly push himself to be the best carried him through the units after he joined the Bundeswehr, by the time he started through the selection process for KSK he had achieved the rank of Feldwebel or Sergeant. He went through the three week physical and mental screening before setting into the 3 month endurance test in the Black Forest where most of his class failed out leaving only 9% of the initial class. He had made it through but now had 2-3 years of training with different units around the world, Norway for arctic training, Austria for mountain training, Texas for desert training, San Diego for aquatic training and Belize for jungle training. After the 3 years and 20 different training schools he had finally become a fully fledged member of the Kommando Spezialkräfte. After becoming a member it was busy, the spring of 2006 and his first deployment as a KSK operative was to Iran as part of Operation: Enduring freedom. 14 years later his partner, Efeu, and he were selected to join rainbow alongside the Gsg-9 operators.
