Day Thirty Five
I kissed her hand and watched as a smile spread across her lips. Her smile made me feel happy inside.
"You don't have to stay here, you know." She whispered.
"You're crazy, Jillian."
Again, she smiled but this time she managed to pull a chuckle along with it. "No, I'm serious."
"So am I."
She let out a sigh, "I don't want to be a burden on your life, Michael. It's obvious that I'm not going to make it much longer."
I shook my head, "You could never be a burden on my life. When will you realize this? You're all I've ever wanted. You're all I've ever needed."
I watched her face as her eyes got cloudy. I felt my hands begin to shake and my knees fell weak.
"I wish I could have done more for you." She said softly as a tear fell from her eye.
"Don't." I wiped the tear from her cheek. "I couldn't have asked for a better life with you, Jill. We both gave each other all we had and that's all I could have ever asked for. Neither of us wanted this."
She nodded as she grabbed my hand in hers. "When the time comes, and you do go home, I left you a letter inside your pillowcase. Make sure you read it after my funeral. Okay?"
I felt a tear fall from my cheek onto my hand. I nodded. "Okay."
She smiled.
"I don't want to lose you." I choked out.
"I know. And I'm sorry."
"Don't be."
"I'll miss you, Clifford."
"Not as much as I'll miss you... Clifford."
"I love you."
"I love you more."
"Don't fight with me."
I smiled, "okay, I wont."
"Good." She smiled.
Little did I know, that would be the last word Jillian would ever say to me.
