The century began with an attack on the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. This event shocked the world, but especially America. This one attack would change the history of America and its policies. America then went into an economic sort of depression in 2008, the stock markets not doing too well.
Entering the 2010s, we have what I believe is a Second Cold War. America, NATO, and the Europeon Union fighting for dominance on a continent that Russia, a weakened Russia, has been trying to spread its own influence. Same goes with China. China has been fighting a cold war since 2018 against America, but unlike Russia, China is becoming stronger, not weaker. China really does want to spread it's dominance throughout Asia too. Vietnam, Philippines, Taiwan, and Hong Kong are not too fond of this Chinese fight for influence. Especially Hong Kong, who has been protesting China's authoritarian goverment since 2019. Here in 2020, we have a worldwide pandemic of COVID-19, or just coronavirus for short. At the time of writing, coronavirus is infecting 700,000 worldwide.
The Middle East. This is a very important region for this century. The Arab Spring in the early 2010s brought out a series of protests against the Arab governments. Now let's look at Syria. Syria has been a symbol of modern geopolitics, ever since the country broke into civil war in 2011 with god knows how many factions, Turkey is also invading Syria. Saudi Arabia are also fighting their own cold war for dominance in the region. Saudi Arabia is backed by the West, while Iran is backed by Russia and her allies. Iran and America also do not have the best relations at all, especially with the assassination of Qassem Soleimani in January 2020. And we all already know abour Israel.
Tensions within the United States are also high. Both the Democrats and the Repiblicans have been very aggresige with each other, especially since the election of Donald Trump. The increase of Latino and Black voters is posing a threat to the Republican party, as areas with large populations of those races almost always vote Democrat. But this does not mean Republicans cannot win again. The Democrats are worried about a Trump reelection.
In January 2020, The United Kingdon left the EU, paving a new future for the country, with its new Prime Minister, Boris Johnson.
