Guy | Girl
When he walked into room 302 that afternoon, he was fully prepared to ignore her the entire period. He would have much preferred to sit in the corner and keep his emotions bottled up inside of him but instead he found her waiting with an impeccably frosted cake, decorated with slices of candied lemon.
"Lemon cake. Your favourite." She nudged it towards him. A gesture of apology. For yesterday.
He looked at the cake suspiciously, torn in between his annoyance for her and his mouth-watering for the cake. When the second half of his mind won, he walked over and cut a slice for himself. He took a bite wordlessly. The lemony tang filled his mouth. Damn her and her knowledge of how much he loved the cake from this specific bakery. Something he didn't think even his girlfriend knew.
"I'm sorry." She apologized again. "Yesterday was the wrong day to push it."
When he didn't respond, choosing to focus on the cake. She continued.
"It's hard sometimes. To know when to stop and when you're hurting other people's feelings." Gesturing towards herself, she said, "Debate captain remember? I like debating and arguing until I win. One of my many flaws."
When she noticed his clenched fists, her voice softened.
"It's okay to cry you know. A part of feminism is that men should be allowed to show emotions. It's normal. You're allowed to let go. You're allowed to feel and express. It doesn't make you weak. It makes you human."
So in front of one of his oldest friends, he let his eyes water a little bit before clamping down hard on his tear ducts. "I think my relationship is over."
"Have another slice of cake. Cake makes everything better."
