My stomach growled as if on cue when the lunch bell rang.

My friend Claire giggled into her hand when she heard it, making my face go bright red.
'Hungry?'

'Just a tad.' I chuckled.

After saying goodbye to her I made my way from my art class to the canteen. Of course on the day that I'm starving I end up with a classroom that's miles away from everything.
Eventually when I got there my friends were already sat eating, but on the upside the lunch line wasn't too long. I just hoped I wasn't left with something gross like casserole.

I joined the back of the queue and zoned out until a presence behind me caught my attention.
'Violet?'

The shadow ended up belonging to our schools resident bad boy, Kane Ferris. I say bad boy, but really it was all rumours and speculation.

'Oh hey Kane.' I said with a smile.

He looked me up and down, a slow grin making an appearance rather than an expected sleazy smirk.
'Wow! Well at least the summer holidays was kind to one of us.'

I chuckled, clocking onto deep purple bruising around his one eye that he was referring too. Kane's bad boy rep really was mostly all made up, but the shiner he was sporting right now really did add fuel to the fire.
'I don't know, I think you look a little badass.' I said making him burst out laughing.

If people hadn't been staring already they were now. It wasn't often you saw Kane Ferris laughing. It was sharp and commanding, making it near on impossible for other students to ignore.

'You won't think that when you find out how I actually got it.'

'So you're telling me you didn't fight off a group of ninjas?' I said seriously, earning another laugh from him.

'Sadly not, my 8 year old cousin kicked a football at my face.'

'Seriously?'
Scratching the back of his neck and raising an eyebrow was enough to confirm what he said was the truth, making me break down in peels laughter.
'Ouch, that kids got a seriously powerful shot. You're really going to lose that reputation of yours when people find out the fearless Kane Ferris was beaten by an 8 year old!'

He groaned, covering his face with his hands before peaking through his fingers to look at me.
'You're right. I should stick to the ninja story.'

What was comical about it all was, as you can tell, Kane's actually a really nice guy. I got paired with him on a English project last year and I remember almost pissing myself when I found out I was paired with him. With his almost pitch black eyes that didn't seem to miss a thing, easy good looks and all the rumours going around about him, I had been dreading it. I quickly found out though that he was just an intelligent guy that could stand up for himself with a dark sense of humour. We got on like a house on fire once he figured out I wasn't an airhead and actually had fun during the project. I would even go as far to say I was a little disappointed when the project was over.

'Your brothers glaring at me.'

I glanced at my brothers usual table to find him and his friends looking over. I rolled my eyes before giving Kane my attention again.
'Yeah he does that. Just ignore him, that's what I do.'

'That must be hard when he's shouting your name.' I realised he was right and Jacob was in fact calling me. Instead of replying I sighed and ignored him.

'Then I put my music in. That normally manages to drown him out.'

Kane burst out laughing.
'You're going to get a hit out on my head, I hope you know that.'
