* CASSY IN PICTURE*
I splashed with the creatures as they came up to me. They asked me many questions about who I was. They must be very young, or I must be old.
Only one in particular stood out.
"Did you by chance know Old Mel?" An older red fox asked me politely. I nodded my head with a reply, "yes, ma'am, I did know him. I was good friends with him and Jamie when I was a very young girl." Her eyes wore down.
She stared at the rocks below her feet and we stood in silence.
"Why do you ask?" I questioned. Her expression worried me. A million other questions rushed at me all at once.
"Wait. Is he okay? What about Jamie? Where are they?!" I slurred out without taking a deep breath. All the possibilities all crashed against my chest.
"My dear... Mel-" her voice cracked, "I'm- I'm afraid to say that... Melvin... He passed away."
I felt my heart swell up as far as my ribs could hold it, then it shrunk to a size smaller that DNA. I couldn't breathe. I couldn't think. I couldn't move. I felt like I just died inside.
"Wha-" my voice cracked harshly. I felt my face swell up. My eyes began to burn. I only allowed one to tear to freedom.
I wanted to see him so bad. He was the closest friend I had. He was the only person I knew I could talk to about anything. No he's gone.
I suddenly embraced the pain of rocks stab through my knees as they collided with the ground. I pulled my knees tight to my chest.
He was gone.
I only had one question left...
"Jamie?"
I didn't want him to be gone too.
I didn't give myself time to think.
I pulled my feet from under me, almost causing myself to fall again.
I took off full sprint to their home. They lived in a mere hole in the side of a small hill. It didn't give off the best fancy appearance. It was as good as a home could be.
Wait... "What?" I broke down the rotted wooden door and saw nothing.
"Jamie?" My chest weighed down. "No, Jamie?"
"Jamie. Jamie, please come out. You did it. You tricked me..." A river slid down my full cheeks.
"Jamie?! Mel... Please guys come out. Please." I let out a heavy sigh. I didn't know what to do. I let myself giggle in hope that they would hear me and catch on that I knew it was a joke, only it wasn't.
They're gone.
I needed something or someone to feel my pain. I couldn't handle it.
I picked up the first thing I saw, which was an old broomstick, and threw it as hard as I could at the closest wall. I stomped and screamed until I literally couldn't breathe.
I slowly and calmly sat down on a decaying and faded red chair. I rubbed the arm rest thinking about how he would sit here and read me and Jamie stories from old books and speak of humorous stories if his youthful years. We would sit on a round rug he had. We sat by the fire with a cup of magic cocoa.
A tear trickled down the side of my face.
"I love you." I rested with my hand under my cheek.
