The cheese fondue was easy to procure.
Once, in an effort to quell Clembrane's onslaught of pudding, Dib and Gaz had tried to convince him to make fondue. It was similar enough to pudding that they thought it might work. Clembrane watched as the two siblings made the cheese fondue as he made his own alongside them. At the end of the cooking session, The three of them had collectively made one pot of cheese fondue, and one pot of pudding. Apparently Zim had programmed Clembrane's ability to make pudding so well that it was literally the only thing he could make, no matter what ingredients he used. Both concoctions were put in Tupperware and saved for later in the fridge. Fortunately no one had bothered to eat the cheese fondue since, and it was still sitting in the fridge for Dib to use in his Cheesus summoning spell.
The cheese fondue was easy to procure. It was those damned golden cheddar fish that eluded Dib's grasp.
It should have been easy. The spell only had two ingredients: (1) Cheese Fondue, (2) Golden Cheddar Fish Crackers. It wasn't even as if the Golden Cheddar Fish were rare: there were advertisements for them all of the time on TV, and Dib could have sworn that they even had a box of them in the pantry. But alas, as he tore through the food, there were no Golden Cheddar fish to be seen.
Dib Swore. Gaz, who was sitting on the couch playing videogames, shot Dib a look. "Dad said no swearing, dumbshit." She glared at him.
Dib sighed at the irony and raised his hands in defeat. "Alright. No more swearing."
Gaz slowly turned away from him. "Good." She went back to her game.
Now where could Dib get some golden cheddar fish crackers? He could go to the store, perhaps.
He looked outside at the darkened sky. No, it was too late to go to the store.
Perhaps he could ask a neighbor? He looked again at the darkened sky. All of his neighbors were probably asleep or otherwise likely did not want to be bothered.
Then where could Dib go for golden fish crackers. Or if not where, then who could he ask?
The realization hit him along with a groan.
Zim.
Only Zim would be up at this hour, as Dib was reasonably certain Zim didn't sleep. In addition, Zim's robot, GIR, had a habit of collecting food items. If there was anyone Dib could ask for golden fish crackers at this unreasonable hour who had a reasonable chance of having them, it was Zim.
It seemed an odd choice, considering the golden fish crackers were going to be used to destroy Zim, but Dib figured it was worth a shot anyway. He headed outside and walked towards the horrid, garish green excuse of a "house" where the alien resided. The disk-like eyes of the large lawn gnomes placed on the lawn greeted Dib with an eerie glint. The boy knew that if he made one wrong step into their line of sight the defense gnomes would blow him into oblivion. They proved no problem for Dib, however, as he had learned how to perfectly maneuver to the house's doorstep without alerting the gnomes after multiple attempts at breaking into Zim's base.
Once Dib finally reached Zim's doorstep, he simply looked at the door for a moment, reconsidering his decision to ask Zim for the cheese fish. This was ZIM he was talking about, after all. His arch nemesis! His enemy! It didn't make sense! Was it even right to ask him for the golden cheddar fish? Especially when Dib was going to use them against the alien? He supposed the moral quandaries didn't really apply here, since Zim was trying to destroy the earth. Any measure Dib took to thwart Zim would be excusable by the fact that he was saving the entire Earth in the process. And besides, the worst actual outcome that could happen from asking Zim for crackers would be Zim physically attacking Dib, which Dib had survived multiple times previously. Even though it was unlikely to yield good results, there was little to no reason to not try anyway. All he had to do was knock on the door. Nothing to lose.
