There was joy in the air as top dignitaries, politicians and people of Amuwo-odofin in Lagos state gathered for the three days celebration of the first princess's wedding.
Princess Adediwura was set to marry a prince from a neighbouring town and she was excited.
The prince and princess had grown up together, attended the same university in America and had been acquainted during many local and national ceremonies.
They had even stolen some precious time alone during their many months of courtship.
All her life, the princess had been waiting for such a day to arrive; a grand wedding in which she would be the absolute centre of attention.
To prepare for the first night celebration, the maids adorned Princess Adediwura with beautiful gold jewelry, beads and delicate ink drawings on her skin.
"Princess" implored by one of the maids "please tell us how you feel about your future husband"
The princess replied "He is a nice man, predictable but loyal. He will be a good husband. He promised to spoil me and buy everything I might need or want".
Sisi, the youngest maid and princess Wura's favourite maid asked, "Princess, do you love him and is he in love with you too?"
Princess Wura laughed heartily and said "Of course we love each other. We can't stop staring at each other lovingly anytime we are together.
I'm always thinking about him; my body has this pretty sneaky ways of tipping me off anytime I'm around him or when I can't get him off my mind" the princess giggled as she discovered the maids were mesmerized with her tales of love and their innocence.
"Don't worry girls, you all will find your own prince charming when the time comes" Princess Wura added in an ecstatic manner.
"Amen to that" the maids all shouted except Sisi who was lost in her own world. She believed the maids in the palace can't leave the palace for life except luck smile on them.
She was thinking on how she would survive in the palace. Princess Wura's maids would be distributed to the royal household after her wedding and Sisi had been praying fervently for her not to be assigned to Princess Adetola.
Princess Adetola hated her gut and Sisi did not know how she would survive in Adetola's chambers.
She started reminiscing on how her journey started in the palace few months ago...
Omosholape Adigun is her name. She is tall and fair in complexion. Her friends back at home sometimes joked that she looked like a Fulani girl.
Her hair is jet black and it cascades down to her shoulders. Her lashes are long and she has full pouty lips.
But never have she been called Omosholape by anyone especially her family. She was born some twenty years ago into the poor family of Adigun.
She never experienced any joy in her home.
Her mother detested her so much. Why? She still didn't know. Her father was the non chalant type. He totally turned a blind eye to all the abuse weighed on her.
Her three elder siblings are not different. They all hauled abuse on her and she was never loved.
They all called her Sisi. It was when she was twelve that she had a big fight with her immediate elder sister and she called her a bastard.
"You are a bastard, crazy girl fighting with me. You are a cursed child that brought poverty to our family. No wonder no one dared call you Omosholape because your birth changed our life for the worst."
She remembered those words clearly and can't seem to forget.
She felt bad that day and truly she looked different compared to her siblings.
They were all dark in complexion. Her mother is chocolate in complexion and her father was jet black like her hair. So where did she get the Fulani's gene from? She wondered.
Five years later, her father, a peasant farmer struggling to train his children died and heaven was let loose. Her mother sent her to the palace few years later to become a maid and her salary paid by the king started taking care of her mother and siblings.
She did her Senior Secondary School Certificate Exam (S.S.C.E) two years ago and came out in flying colours. Now, she could not further her studies again.
Sisi's life changed once she got to the palace. It seemed like she left the little self-esteem, self-confidence and self dignity she got back home.
She struggled to come to terms with the fact that she had to move on with her life.
After getting betrayed by her family, she had no one else to turn to and she found solace with Princess Wura who she was assigned to immediately she got to the palace.
Princess Wura who took her as a younger sister is now leaving the palace for her husband's place.
Is she ready for this new change of ownership? No one actually knows.
"A penny for your thought" Sisi heard Princess Wura said jolting her out of her reverie and the other maids laughed at her. She is always carried away with her thoughts hence she was awarded the name "Sisi, the dreamer.''
