Those last couple of weeks didn't go as I'd like them to, I had dreams of us together and I just wanted to fall to my knees and beg for God to give him back to me. But I couldn't, I go to work and go on with my days as painful as they have been."Good morning Mrs. Jackson, how are you feeling today?" I ask my patient as I take her vitals.
"Hello Reign, I'm good, ready to get out of this place." She replies with a smile and a light chuckle.
"Hopefully you will be soon." I reply as I give her a sincere smile.
"How have you been this past week?"She questions in a small voice "I know it's been rough for you, but we are all here for you." She tells me with a sincere smile. This is the downfall of living in a small town, everyone knows you and your hardships.
"I got by ok, thank you for asking." I tell her as I walk over to my computer to type in her numbers. "I'll be back in a couple of hours, so just page me if you need anything."
Clocking out from work, me and Tom talk about everything and Nothing at the same time. I give him a hug and wave goodbye as I get in my truck, ready to go home.
"Want to go out tonight?" Jack asks when I enter the house. "It doesn't have to be anywhere fancy, we can just grab a beer or 2"
"Yea, just let me jump in the shower and change really quick." I replied before heading up the stairs to the bathroom.
Getting out of the shower, I put on a spaghetti strap dress that is white with floral printing on it and a jean jacket over. Sliding on my black flats, I go to my vanity to put light eyeshadow on and mascara, finishing the look up with some nude colored lipstick.
Heading down the stairs I take a glance at Jack who is wearing his normal jeans that tug on his ass as he moves and a white wife beater underneath his red flannel button up. He has one of his hands tucked into his pocket while the other is scrolling through his phone as his back is leaned against the wall.
I awkwardly cough and quickly catch his attention, he looked up at me quickly. He looks all the way down to my feet and slowly starts to look up, the look in his eyes is unplaceable as my stomach starts to do flips from the intensity.
"Ready to leave?" he asks once his eyes finally meet mine. I give him a quick nod before walking out of the house in front of him. He grabs the passenger side door of his truck and holds it open for me. I mumble a quiet 'thanks' to him as we back out of the driveway.
After a half hour of driving, we finally arrived outside of a football game, Jack came over to my side and opened the door for me to get out.
"This is where I go after a long day," Jack tells me as we fall into step beside each other.
"Why, it's not quite?" I questioned.
"It's always dramatic. You can sit on a bench and watch people as they drink more then they should and make fools of themselves." He replies as we take a seat on the bench beside one another.
"Is that you Jack?" A voice cuts me off before I can say anything.
We both turn around and see a short red headed girl with bright blue eyes. She looks just as shocked as us when we see her.
"It's so good to see you Jack, it's been too long" She says as she practically throws herself into his arms. I stand back awkwardly as she hugs him a bit too long for my liking.
"Nice to see you too, Savannah" he says as he peels her arms from around him.
"Hi I'm Savannah, it's nice to meet you.." She trails off awkwardly waiting for me to finish her sentence.
"Reign, my names Reign, and it's nice to meet you too" I say and extend my hand for her to shake which she does but pulls away as if I have a disease.
She turns back to Jack and places one of her hands on his bicep "we should go to dinner and catch up" she says as she loops her arm around his and starts pulling jack down the pavement.
"Everyone please draw your attention to the field for the welcoming home of our Brave Soldiers, and give a moment of silence for those who were unable to make it home."
Everyone's attention is drawn to the field as everything goes silent, The soldiers start to pile onto the field in a line and wait for a minute. Scanning the field I noticed someone who I never thought I'd see again.
"No," I whispered quietly but Jack must have heard because he looked down at me and gave me a weird look.
I don't pay him any attention as I stare at him. He is scanning the crowd and our eyes meet. It's really him, he is actually here, right now he is here. I don't know if I can face him, I don't know if I'm ready for it.
I start to head to the gate as he and all the other soldiers walk towards it. I faintly hear Jack calling for me from behind but I ignore all his attempts at getting my attention and stay focused on him and only him.
Once we reach each other we just stand there, neither of us moving as my eyes fill with tears. I raise a shaky hand to touch his cheek.
"How are you Ray?" He asks and I start to cry.
