On the last night in the hospital, when everyone was packing all the bags and were getting excited to take him home, Kiara's grandfather's heart rate monitor started beeping rapidly. His body started to shake and he couldn't breathe, his body felt heavy; he wasn't able to speak and very soon went unconscious.
"Code Blue! Room 414! We need the crash cart ASAP!" The nurse from the reception shouted.
The hall that was filled with cheerfulness suddenly became silent. They all rushed to the room to see what was happening when the medical staff pushed through them and started checking what was wrong.
They saw that he was perspiring and he was lying there unconscious. They injected medicines into the bottle attached to him through needles and tried to stabilise him and get his breathing that was coming out in small short pants, back to its normal state. They check the machines to see what exactly went wrong and what happened to cause him this state he was currently in. He checks the monitors of the wires that are attached to him and examines if any of them came loose.
After the doctor examined his condition and saw the ECG machine showing uneven heart rate, he declared, "He just had a heart attack. I'm afraid he won't be able to leave the hospital tomorrow."
They all could not hear what the doctor was saying after that because they could not get over the two words 'heart attack' that struck like a broken record's in everyone's mind.
They just froze at that moment. They couldn't imagine a man like Him going away with just a single cardiac arrest!
"Don't worry, he is a strong soul, he is out of danger it's just that he is a little more fragile now and therefore needs constant medical support. I can discharge him tomorrow but I would suggest you let him stay a while longer so that we can closely monitor his progress." Said the doctor, observing pale faces of everyone.
"I think it is best if he stays here only." Said Vrinda's mother and everyone present there nodded their heads in agreement. They waited nervously for him to regain his consciousness for the rest of the night.
He opened his eyes at dawn and looked quizzically at the concerned faces all over the room.
"What is wrong?" He asked.
"What is the last thing from yesterday that you remember?" Asked his wife.
"Your happy faces rushing out to pack things and take me home today!" Replied Kiara's grandfather.
"Okay, so after that you had some-" His wife stops to think for a suitable word and then continues, "-complications. You need to stay here for some time before you can come back home."
"Oh, okay." He says, not convinced with the answer but decides to not press it any further. He continues to say, "I don't want you all to stay back here this time though, I'll be fine. Go home. Get some rest and freshen up. I have enough people to take care of me. It looks like you all have some sleep to catch up with."
They all try to argue with him for staying with him but he persuades them to just take the day off and go back to their routines and come back the next day.
They sigh in defeat and leave the hospital by four in the evening.

Vrinda returned home that evening by six with a very worried expression on her face. She rang the bell and Kiara came rushing to open it up, eager to look at her mother's happy face. She was very excited to meet her grandfather the next day. With these thought she opened the door and stepped back to let her mother enter.
After entering, she did not talk like she usually would have, with Kiara and just headed straight for her room. Kiara noticed that something wasn't right and carefully went in to see what was actually going on with her mother.
When Kiara tried to figure out her mother's face, she saw her eyes did not have their usual spark. They were dim and the small smile that she had put up on her face also did not reach up as high as it usually did. There were dry tear streaks all over her cheeks. Observing her dishevelled appearance, she knew that something was wrong. She went to her, sat next to her carefully, leaving enough space between them and asked,
"What is it mom? Why are you looking so worried? Is Grandpa okay? Tell me what is it mom, tell me please!"
"It is okay sweetie, your grandpa is absolutely okay! But he is old and sick so I am just worried for him. Th -that's it..." Her mother told her with a smiling face. She just couldn't tell Kiara the whole thing so easily. She knew how close Kiara was to her grandfather. It would break her heart to hear the truth. She kept that to herself though she did not like hiding things from her daughter.
Kiara, on the other hand had learnt to understand things in less words. She knew she was too young to be in the hospital, beside him but she still wanted him to feel as if she was right him. So, the next day, Kiara made another card and gave it to her mom and told her to give it to her grandfather.
She said, "Mom, will you give this to grandpa please? I'm sure when he sees my card, he will feel better! It'll make him feel like I am right beside him. I want him to feel my presence."
"Of course I will give honey. I'm sure he'll get better by seeing it." Vrinda said reassuring Kiara.
Vrinda and Arjun left for the hospital after another sleepless night. Arjun tried to console Vrinda and tried calming her by whispering sweet nothings in her ears and cuddling with her but she was so deeply impacted with this that there was nothing that could make her feel better, but the news that her father was okay. She knew that everyone has to leave one day but she wasn't ready to face that one day so soon.
She wanted more time with him but she also wanted that if he needs to leave, he should leave peacefully and not in pain. He was a selfless man and she did not want him to suffer at the last moment.
When they came home in the evening, Kiara asked her mother of what her grandfather thought of the card and Arjun put his hand at the small of Vrinda's back and caressed her and answered, "He loved it. He said that it made him feel closer to you."
"Really? That's great! I will make a card for him everyday. You'll see, he will get better. He will come home." Kiara replied and went back to her room to make another card.
"I am not ready to see her heartbroken, Arjun. What do we do?" Vrinda asked after she made sure that Kiara could not hear them.
"We can't do anything, sweetheart. She is stronger than we know. She will understand and cope up with it. It has to be dealt with one day or the other and there is no point hiding it. She loves him too much but we'll explain it to her when the time comes. Don't worry. Please, come to bed. You need to rest and sleep. You don't look so well." Arjun said, his thumb caressing her cheek.
Vrinda nodded and went to change into her night dress. When she came out of the washroom, she saw that Arjun had changed and was waiting for her to come to the bed. Vrinda lied down and closed her eyes but there was too much going on in her head and she couldn't sleep.
Arjun, sensing this, draped his arm around Vrinda's waist and pulled her to himself so that Vrinda's head was lying on his chest. Her eyes fluttered and she slowly started drifting to sleep, listening to Arjun's heartbeat.
"Stay strong baby. I love you." Was the last thing she heard Arjun whisper before sleep took over her entire body. It was a peaceful night for them. Though, deep in her heart, she had this sinking feeling, she couldn't describe it but it felt like a part of her heart was trying to leave her chest and latch on to something before it was lost...
