Sighing I put the last of my clothes into my suitcase, mum told us that tomorrow we're going to be evacuated. I knew it was coming, but it still doesn't feel real to me. With another sigh I look behind me to see mum standing in the doorway looking at me with a sad smile on her face, she's about to speak but then the air raid siren goes off.

"Go get Lucy." She instructs me before running off to get the shelter ready.

I then run into Lucy and Susan's room, Susan has already ran out of the room but Lucy is crying in her bed holding her teddy bear.

"Come on Lucy!" I yell over the siren, taking her by the hand we begin to run outside.

Lucy holds onto my hand tightly as we run into the shelter, but then Edmund starts yelling about dad and runs back into the house with Peter following him. I sit down in the shelter and pull Lucy onto my lap, holding my hands over her ears she snuggles into me continuing to cry softly. After a couple of minutes Peter tosses Edmund into the shelter.

"You could have gotten us both killed!" He yells at him, his temper flaring.

"Stop it!" Mum yells at him and then goes to comfort Edmund who's crying over a broken picture of dad.

"Why can't you just do as your told?" He asks and then pulls the door closed.

We're in the shelter for about two hours before we get the all clear, with a yawn I pick up Lucy who at some point fell asleep against me. I carry her inside and then put her into her bed before going to my room, I was pretty lucky since Edmund and Peter share a room and there wasn't enough room for me to share with Lucy and Susan. But at times like this it feels pretty lonely. I quickly change into a clean nightgown and then tuck my legs under the skirt, there's a knock at the door and Peter walks in.

"Hey Pete." I say to him, still shaking from the air raid.

"Hey Lizzie." He says sitting down next to me, dressed in his own pyjamas.

"Why did you have to shout at Edmund? He's finding it more difficult since dad left for the war." I say to him as I brush my blonde hair.

"He needs to think of others, if he had gotten stuck inside and a bomb had dropped...." He says with a sigh. "I promised dad I would keep an eye on him."

"I know, but sometimes you need to give him some space. And try not to yell at him." I say giving him a nudge.

"Ok, ok. I'll try." He says with a smile, he then kisses my forehead. "Night Lizzie."

"Night Pete." I say as he walks out of my room.

With a smile I climb under the sheets and fall fast asleep.

The next day we're standing on a platform with hundreds of other children of all ages and their mothers, most of the fathers are now away at war so it's no surprise it's full of mothers. Mum clips a tag onto the string of my gas mask and then does the same for the others.

"If dad were here he wouldn't make us go." Edmund says with a frown on his face.

"If dad were here, then the war would be over. And then we wouldn't need to go." Peter says to him.

"Promise me you'll listen to Peter and Elizabeth." Mum says to him, she then goes to give him a kiss but he turns his head away from her.

Mum then turns to Peter and pulls him into a hug.

"Promise me you'll look after the others." She says giving him a tight hug.

"I will mum." He replies, tears shining in his blue eyes.
