Car Troubles

(Peridot's POV)

I turned the a/c to full blast, leaning back into the cushioned drivers seat chair. I had been driving for hours and the desert heat was exhausting not just for myself but my car. It was an old yellow van that I had remodeled a few years back before leaving the city. Even with all the refurbished parts and new paint job on it, it was obvious that the car had seen better days, what with the way the engine sputtered as it climbed up winding hills, and metal clicked as the car went down the rocky path roads.

It had been at least 13 hours now since I got back on the road from my last stop, there was food stocked to the brim in all of the cabinets and the water jugs had been overfilled as the water sploshed around inside of them at the back of the van. I couldn't help but close my eyes every few moments as I pulled at my loose black short sleeve shirts collar. I had just picked it up at the same stop I got my rations at, inside one of the gas stations. Its cover art was that of a cartoonist alien with a cheesy text box above its head reading "I believe in the unknown". How fitting that id find myself wearing it now, because i surely was in the unknown. My GPS had stopped working a few miles back, which meant I was in the middle of a dead-zone with no signal and a map that I could barely understand. I shifted my knee against the steering wheel, pulling the crumbled up map from the passenger seat as I brushed the wrinkles out looking around the map for any navigational help but just as before to me it was nothing more but squiggly lines and fine text words scattered around.

I crumbled it up once again throwing it back into the passengers seat as it bounced with the momentum from my throw on the cushioned seat and down onto the glossed wooden floorboards. A sigh escaped my mouth as i watched the map leave my sight, my short arms wouldn't be able to reach it and if I stopped the car there was no way it would turn back on with the way it was sputtering. I looked back at the road as the car finally passed over a clearing and into flat lands, there were cactus scattered as far as the eye could see and more towering mountains far off ahead. Once again no electrical poles, which meant no signal still and for the rest of the distance from what I saw. I continued scanning the horizon as a clicking sound began from my dashboard. The 'Check Engine' signal had popped up with its neon yellow light and sent a wave of anxiety down my spine. If I broke down in the middle of the unknown i was as good as dead, this van would turn into a metal toaster and I was already struggling to handle the heatwave with the a/c blasting into my face.

I looked back up on the horizon, as a small blotch of houses came into view around 8 miles down the road. It was definitely one of those 'off grid' towns by the looks of it as my car got closer and closer. The houses were all 2 stories with extending tile roofs and bricked or sheet walls. As I turned the wheel to enter into the town a pothole collided with my tire, throwing me upward from the seat as my head collided with the ceiling.

"GAH! Really?!" i yelled as my hand met with the blonde locks of my hair and i rubbed my head.

Even a run down place like this has got to have a mechanic right? I thought to myself as I passed the entrances single gas pump station, a few strangers were peeking their heads out of their windows watching my bright colored van pass down the road. I was like a sore thumb compared to the dull worn down colors the rest of the place had. Passing one of the markets, there sat a small cubby shop with a crooked sun baked sign that read "Auto-mechanic Shop". Just what i needed i thought to myself as i curved the van into the parking lot of the mechanics as my car sputtered one last cry for help from the engine and my keys pulled from the ignition and into my blue jean pockets. The sun was shimmering down with full force, and even though I hated the heat, I hated being sun burnt a lot more and my pale skin no matter how much sunscreen i used always burnt. Thus, i leaned into the back of the van grabbing a nearby green and black plaid pattern shirt and draped it over myself before stepping out from the van and onto the gravel floor, shutting the door with a click behind me.

Now all I needed to do was find this mechanic, get directions while they fixed my car and be back on my way out of this place.
