A Mechanic Knows Best

(Lapis's POV)

It was another usual day, nothing to do but sit around the shop while my dad was off getting parts. He always talked about the importance of staying stocked up on equipment and made it a reoccurring activity of his every Thursday to leave me at the register by myself while he went driving a few hours down to Gem City even though our customer base was nonexistent. If anything he was collecting parts for his little put together projects of broken down vehicles he'd clean up and then resell. It was probably the only reason he managed to keep this shop, and of course free labor from me.

I was home-schooled, what with there being no actual school facility for miles and the last thing I wanted to do was waste my time inside even if there was nothing better outside. It was a breath of fresh air and id meet up with a few of the other kids in town and head to the outskirts where a few spray painted buildings laid out and smoke. It went on like that for awhile, my dad would head to his warehouse to go work while my mom spent her free time teaching my brother who was home-schooled just like me but not exactly the best academically though I don't blame him. There wasn't even a library in this town or a single intellectual for miles, if there was i doubt they'd ever wanna settle down here. So once she went to go help him, id open my window and walk onto the tiled flooring and hop off the ledge.

That was until one day when jumping down I fell at a bad angle and sprained my ankle. I did my best to muffle my groans of pain but of course my mother still heard the ruckus and came out to find me bent down with my hands holding onto my swollen ankle. After that she made sure to check on me every hour but it wasn't enough for my dad, he knew I was smart and took to bringing me and my school laptop to work with him and kept me busy. Teaching me everything he knew about working on motor vehicles, and how to care for myself. Surprisingly enough it was a dream of his that id take on his shop but that was more than far off from my own ambitions. I wanted to travel, see the world and meet new people. See trees and luscious grass fields for once in my life and go do normal things like visiting a movie house, or having dinner at a nice restaurant. Things that small town life denied me of.

My hands rested on my chin as I continued to daydream about my future plans and all the amazing things id do if given the chance. I was so far off into my own head space that I didn't even notice the sound of the doors bell chime as someone walked in. I continued to stare off as the person walked around the displays and towards me clicking their tongue, snapping me out of my daze.

"Oh, sorry about that. Can I help you?" i said looking them up and down, they definitely weren't from here and what was up with that get up. They were a few inches shorter than me with hair like a birds nest with each blonde lock going in a different direction, and a black alien t-shirt that stuck to their chest from sweat along with a baggy green plaid shirt that dangled beyond their blue jean waist line. As my eyes glanced back up from their shirt i noticed their eyes which peered back at me with an emerald tint to them, id never seen such brightly colored eyes before, they were the same color as I imagined those grass fields would be.

"Yeah, hi" They responded back squinting their eyes at me "My van just broke down on my way past your erhm-" they said pausing to look away and through a nearby window "town? Anyways, I need to get it fixed asap, the engine lights flashing and ive got no idea what the exact issue might be"

"Sure, ill take a look" I chuckled as i stepped from the counter and towards them

"You? Arent you like 16? Do you even know how to fix a car"

I gave a stern look at them before passing by and towards the door, opening it up "Yeah actually, I do. And for someone so short, i wouldnt go making assumptions about peoples ages." I said  walking outside as the door slowly shut behind but not before i got in a last snarky sentence "You dont even look old enough to drive".

The van was letting out a small cloud of smoke from the engine, as it towered above leaving a small window of shade in front of it. It was such a bright color of yellow that my eyes stung just looking at it, walking closer I pushed my fingers under the hood of the car and lifted it up locking it in place as my head peered inside. The smoke was nauseating, but at least the problem wasnt hidden inside of it. The radiator had overheated, a rather simple fix, and easily something I could handle on my own. I turned from the engine and towards the building as my eyes locked with the girls, whos hands were plastered against the glass watching me as i moved from the vehicle and towards the door opening it once again.

"So whats the problem with the car" she beckoned following next to me as i turned towards the back supply room pausing at the entrance.

"Radiator. It'll be a few hundred, ill have it done for you in a few hours." I responded bluntly reaching my hand into one of the nearby gear boxes pulling a tool-belt around my waist and fastening it before moving onto a few more boxes pulling out tools and a new radiator that i tucked away under my arm.
